nobody here is debating that. what we are debating is whether or not shotting an animal in the head is a humane way to euthanize a dog.

I would say yes, it's an animal, it does not have a soul and does not go to heaven. (yes, hate on me)

for the win^^^
re: Rotts going crazy, who came up with that horsechit?
Rotts have been used since the days of the Roman Empire...they didn't have supply trucks, they took their meals on the hoof...and from experience, I can attest they are absolutely wonderful family dogs. You'll have a hard time spanking your kids with him/her in the room!

I didn't want to be the first to say it. But I'll be the first to agree with you. I'm now thinking that the more humane way would be a bullet. I feel that if anyone is going to put my dog down it'll be me.

If you shoot them with a well-placed shot, it is painless and more humane than a shot.
I've had to kill my own dogs before. Holidays or weekends when I couldn't get a vet to com in, they always told me to just wait. Dogs were at the end of their lives, I think their organs were shutting down (one was 18.5 years old), and they were crying and screaming, It would have been inhumane to let it go on. I just took them out back, gave them a last hamburger (the 18.5 year old couldn't even eat it, and waiting for a quiet spell, and put a .22 through their brains. Trust me, they just went limp. It hurt me far more than it hurt them.
I've had worse experiences with the vet. A consequence of extreme age in dogs is that their veins get weak. I've had two have veins blow out. It is very painful when this happens, and your dog will scream when it happens. Luckily one blew out when they were at the end of the shot, and it still killed her quickly. WORD OF WARNING for those that want to go to a vet. If the vein blows out early in the shot, know how they have to finish the animal? They have to ram, and I mean ram a needle into their heart and inject directly. It's not quick, and is a violent death for the animal. Much nicer to shoot them. I have more trauma over that one than the ones I had to shoot.
As for trauma in general. When I have to have a pet killed (please don't try to powder puff it by calling it euthanasia, or "putting to sleep", at least give them the honor of admitting what you are doing), I'm pretty much non-functional for the next week or so, whether or not I had to personally do it.

Very true. There's some types of people that I'd not think twice about taking them out back and drilling them in the back of the head. May even "miss" a few times. Pedophiles, for instance.

Vet for sure..
Both ways are quick and painless, but how many people could actually shoot their own animal and then clean up the blood and mess and not think nothing of it.
Ask your grandfather if he would like to be shot at

Id use something bigger then a .22. How bad would you feel if the first shot didn't kill it.

Very true. Some humans should be euthanize also, not because they sick or old, but becuase they simply are a waste of air & skin.
P.S. animals don't have souls?...........and humans do? guess we don't watch the news.

I'd euthanize a dog rather then put it down... I think it's more humane, and less of a mess.
Unless this was like an Old Yeller situation and my dog was dribbling with rabies, then yes, I'd probably shoot him (actually have someone else do it)... I'm highly against animal cruelty

A friend of my dad's had a dog that hated the vet beyond belief. He wasn't goin to make the dog's last experience being in a place that he hated. So, he shot him. I never could do it to my dogs, but I can understand the viewpoint.

I personally would not put a dog down myself unless it was necessary to end a lot of pain and suffering right then and there. Otherwise, I would take it to the vets office to be euthanized.
With my luck, I would shoot the animal in the head and it wouldn't die right away, but instead start screaming or whatever. I would have a hard time dealing with that, esp if it were my pet.
