It was a old huge pit. Maybe it was just the vet was scared of that breed. they get crazy when they get old.

It is not something that is pleasant -- neither is driving him to the vet that last time.
For the record, I do not make a habit out of shooting my dogs. The 2 times I've had to do it have been extremely difficult.

But an improperly placed shot is excrutiatingly painful for the dog and traumatic to the shooter. Don't be a cheap *** and pay the vet to let the dog peacefully fall asleep while you are scratching it's head.
I wouldn't do that for a feral animal but one that met me at the door, tail wagging just insanely happy to see me EVERY time I come home....no question.

I couldn't shoot my dog. I would rather take him to the vet and euthanize him so I can hold him and pet him and try to keep him as happy and comfortable as possible while he passes

It's 50/50 on here. Does it make someone a bad person for putting their own animal down? Is it almost a sign of loyalty to put him down? I guess if one can live with it then go ahead. How long has euthanizing a dog been around? It would be hard for me but at the en of the day I could do it.

If that was the only option I had, I would do it. But I would rather OD them on benadryl or something similar. My dogs are pets, not work animals, so they mean a bit more to me. I think it is ok to shoot them if you do it correctly (fast) but I really don't want to have to blow my puppies brains out.

here is a link i found from the american veterinary medical association
the term euthanasia literally meand good death. there are multiple ways of accomplishing this in todays world.
Taking fido out back and putting a round into his head just doesnt seem right. dogs are part of our family, would you take gramps out back if he started going down hill?
|
I don't think it means good death. When I had my dog put down a couple months ago I was there when they did it. He had a terrified look in his eyes, one I have never seen before, not even from previous times when he was at the vet and he's been through some traumatic events at the vet. It was a look of "why are you letting them do this to me". The look on his face still haunts me.

When I had to have my Rottweiler euthanized last May, my vet didn't muzzle him. Pits don't "get crazy" when they get old, either. It all has to do with training and socialization.

I have had to put down 2... a .22 at the base of the neck is the quickest and most effective way to do it. Was not pleasant, but they were both suffering at the time.
And by the way Andy, cats make great chew toys for the over zealous dog... IMO.

Ops example doesn't actually cross into being humane or not. Feeding your dog rear legs first into a wood chipper would be inhumane. Providing a quick death to a suffering animal would be humane.
The method used falls more into personal feelings. Regardless of the method, you're the one pulling the triger. It only varies the number of people involved.

That's why I had the vet do it. I thought it would be quick and painless, I was wrong.
Like it was said before, if you can deal with putting your pet down yourself and cleaning up the mess, go for it. Personally, I couldn't. I had that dog since I was 4, I grew up with him, it was like putting down my own brother. Had he died naturally, I could bury him knowing he was taken care of when it was done. But putting a round in his head, I couldn't.

Not sure what you’re getting at here but I guess since your older you must know everything, even why a vet hundreds of miles away from you would ask us to put a muzzle on a dog they were going to euthanize.
Would you like me to call them and ask for a notarized letter explaining why they requested the muzzle and send it to you via Certified mail?
Let me know, Kthanks.
