Cost me about $1300 for a full engine rebuild for a 4.2. New pistons, new cam, the works. I pulled it and brought it in.

Probably another $200 in wires and odds and ends.

Need to change a lot to swap from a 4 cyl to a 6 cyl. Run a search, there's a few threads about the swap on here already

Search the web for factory rebuilts. Personally I feel it's worth the money. A good factory rebuilt is basically a new engine.

You can do a ring /valve job (I have years ago) but the (good) rebuilder checks the block, head, machines as needed, replaces all the wearing internal parts. My 71 Chev has a Goodwrench rebuilt that was installed nearly 20 years ago.

don't swap from a 2.5 to a 4.0.. its not worth it in my opinion. i think if you have to ask what is involved you are going to jump in over your head haha. no offense. however if you want to take a lot of time to learn, give it a shot. i've done the swap.

move motor mounts, splicing wiring harness blah blah.
i just rebuilt an I6 for about 1000 but i got a nice deal on my machine work.

x2 on that...swaps are a huge ordeal..specially if youve never done one.

but ive seen jeep long blocks new advertised for like 1500 bux..and im thinkn they were the i6...but 4 should be a lil cheaper.

A knock requires machine work to fix. You should just get a used low mileage engine and stick it in. You should be able to get one for $600. $2000 for that Jeep is a good deal. You could have a complete running Jeep for about $2700 (once you get the engine in with new fluids).
