Rates are not only based on age, but years of driving experience. My daugther got her drivers license at the age of 20 (she was busy doing other things). Same rates as a 17 year old (with USAA) because she was an inexperienced driver and she took a driving course (Masterdrive). The only difference is that the rates decreased fairly rapidly.

Drive a cheaper vehicle and just carry liability. 05 TJ is too nice for a 16 year old. You should have a 88 YJ or a 94 XJ. That would make more sense.

Just see what happens to your parents insurance once you get a speeding ticket.

I have an '09 Civic and a '93 YJ. I have full coverage on my Civic and liability on the jeep. $1450/yr for both before I turned 25 (before October). Now I pay $1384/yr. I have Allstate.

That's the problem right there. Teenagers should not be driving any vehicle manufactured after - oh - 1985 or so.

Hell, I didn't even have a car until I was 23.

I'm 20, and before my jeep (last week, actually), I had an 08 Scion tC. I'm in the military, but still under my father's insurance because it's cheaper, and my insurance was 600 every 6 months, so 100 dollars a month, full coverage, maximum limits and everything. I don't have anything on my record though.. no speeding or wrecks (over 500$ ). And now that I have my dream jeep, I know I won't be speeding much because, well, I have no problem driving the same speed as everyone else anymore.

X1000

My first car was a beat up ford taurus (I paid the cash for it), and believe it, if I got a speeding ticket, I was walking to school.

Speaking of insurance, does anyone have an idea of the difference between the premiums on something like a Scion tC and my 07 Wrangler will be?

USAA isn't always the cheapest for military folks btw. When I joined the AF and bought a 94 300zx my insurance rate sucked. After about 2 years I switched to Geico...gave me a much better rate. I have since got married, bought a 98 XJ and 09 370z, only pay about $1700 a year for both insured. I will be 25 in two months, curious to see if it really goes down any.

I tried USAA, and got a higher quote than what my father's company has me at (SC Farm Bureau). I know eventually I'll have to get my own, but I'll stay on my dad's and pay him until they force me out.

Any major insurance company will give you a quote from their website.

I meant to ask if it would be higher or lower, respectively. Sorry, should've clarified. Not looking for an actual number.
