How do I get rid of poison ivy without killing the bushes it's growing in?

I have a bunch of poison ivy vines growing in some arborvitae bushes on the side of my yard. I don't want to kill the bushes, but I need to get rid of the poison ivy. What do I do???

You might do some damage to the surrounding plants but if your careful you can use something from homedepot. Scotts has a product thats from roundup for Poisonous weed control that I have used with decent results.

Scotts makes their Roundup Poison Ivy and Tough Brush control. The nice thing is that you'll be able to spray it on the poison ivy and not have to worry about the plants around it, since it's meant to kill only specific types of weeds. Keep in mind that it works slowly, so don't expect to see dead plants in a few hours. I'd also spot-test it on a spot in the back of the area you want to clear, just to make sure it's not going to kill your arbors.

I would pay the neighborhood kids like $5 to pull them out and throw it away. Total plausible deniability.

"Sorry officer, I had no idea it was poison ivy. I thought it was a Candy Bush. "

Exactly! "Poison Ivy? What Poison Ivy, I asked the kids to pull some weeds, maybe they got it in the woods when they were out playing."

I had a reaction once so bad I was hospitalized as a kid. My face swelled up so bad, and I've NEVER had another outbreak, maybe I developed an immunity or something, because I spend so much time in the woods, there's no way I'm that lucky, I don't even look out to avoid the stuff.

We used to use Clorox. Snip the end of the vine and place the end in a small container with the Clorox in it. You don't need much. In a day or so, the plant will draw the Clorox through the vine and kill the entire plant. It works very well on any vine-type plant. Be careful. Even when it is dead the oils that are left can still irritate the skin.

Lol you guys are bad!!! The bonide works in hours, and you can see it die lol. The stuff turns blue when you spray the plant, and literally within hours it dies...

When I was in scouts we went to Georgia to clean up another camp that was trashed by floods of 94. A lot of people got it, some had to get shots but I didn't get it. I was in the mix as bad as everyone else.

Lucky! I get it just looking at it or walking by with the wind blowing... And bad.. Steroids and epi are my friend... Gotta love having to deal with the itch being allergic to Benadryl

Put on a long sleeve shirt and gloves and pull it all out. Then wash the clothes and tools and yourself with technu and you should be fine. If you kill it with chemical the urishiol oils will still be there and could give you a rash even a month after the plant was dead, so might as well just pull it and save on the chemicals.

In Oregon, from poison oak, I got a bad rash from it once and then was almost completely immune to it. Then I moved to California and twice had really bad reactions where I had to get steroid shots. And now I'm immune to the strains that grow here as well.

I may sound calm, but in my head I've killed you three times.

Unfortunately the Bonide will often kill the plants to want to keep alive, as well.
