About two months ago I went on a fire run for a building struck by lightning. It caused a minor fire on the flat roof of a 3 story multi dwelling.

The coolest thing was that the lightning carbonated a couple of bricks where it struck. The bricks were fused together and looked like they were turned into glass. I wish I had taken pictures...

Our house is in the middle of a 30 acre field with nothing in it besides it. While it was being built, lightning struck nearby, arced up from the ground, went into a water pipe, punched a pin sized hole in the pipe, and THEN went back to ground. Lets see, a few years later I was at home on the computer when a thunderstorm came up and it apparently struck the house or something after the transformer. (It was fine.) It came in, burned up the modem, and sound card in teh computer, and killed our security system. Two years ago, I was again at home alone, and it struck it and jacked up the security system again. I'm beginning to think I shouldn't stay home alone, as it doesn't do it at any other times.

Even the field on a near-miss seems to be sufficient to fry some kinds of electronics. I've lost GF protected outside outlets to a strike more than 100 yards away and standard modems seem to be every bit as vulnerable. We seem to be always replacing the things here in lightning country. I wouldn't be surprised if alarms and security systems weren't just as touchy. I know there is hardware to protect the alarm circuits but hardly anyone ever installs it.

Jerry, I have a ground FARM with all the Ham antennas on this house... (Farm: A number of lightning rods placed and then strapped together.)

Even a grounded strike seems to do some damage peripherally. It's just how it is.

My house got hit one night. Struck the metal drain stack on the roof. We all leave the house and go next door to or neighbor who is a fireman. And my dad asks calm as can be.
Dad "Hey John, can I use your phone"
John "Ya sure, everything OK?"
Dad "Yeah, my house is on fire"
No joke, left about a 5 x 20 foot burn mark on the inside of the roof, that was it. Nothing else in the house was affected.
