Help me with how to tow my jeep

So I sorta want to drag my Jeep back to Alaska with me. It's something like 2500 miles drive. I don't know about towing a 4WD vehicle but Grewe told me to buy a towbar.

So here's my questions.

1) Where do I buy a towbar? I'm in Minneapolis and if anybody knows where I should look, I'd like to get one tomorrow(I need to tow the jeep to a storage unit).

...I'll figure out how to attach it to the jeep. I have a slightly aftermarket bumper. After****typieceofcrapmarket.

2) My Jeep is a CJ7 with A dana 300 Tcase and turbo400 tranny. What position do I need the tcase in?

3) Should I take out the rear driveshaft or front driveshaft? I'm not really interested in doing that.

Thanks, Aaron

im not from around that area, but any where that sells trailers should have them, or maybe even a Tractor Supply or something

im assuming you have lock out hubs on your CJ, so just make sure they arent engaged, and so your front shaft wont even matter then anyways, but really just put the T-case in neutral and your should be set anyways

I towed my 78 CJ-5 around a bunch using a towbar attached to the front bumper. You can double plate the attach points if needed or I think you can also buy "tow shackles" where the tow bar will attach directly to them. I had welded one up for but the same type can be had from various jeep places for about $150 or so. If I recall I pulled the rear DS and made sure the hubs were unlocked. If I recall flat towing with a auto case would damage the rear output bearing etc, but even with the pulled DS I ran the TC in neutral and the trans in gear so oil drag wouldent spin things. Dont forget to unlock your steering also if it has it by putting the key on the first click. have a look at Tomken machine they offer tow bars and shackles so you can get an idea of what there is out there.
Good luck, enjoy Alaska.

You'll need the "paddle wheel" modification to your Dana 300 before you can flat tow your CJ unless you disconnect the front and rear axleshafts. That mod welds oil splashing paddles to the output shaft to keep the bearings lubed.

Yep, one of the drawbacks of the 300.

If you haven't made that drive before you need to protect the front of your CJ. Towed vehicles get beaten up pretty bad if not protected. Rock rash is very bad, broken head lights and windshields are normal.

Okay I'll remember that. Protect the front end. Luckily I don't have a front windshield!
