Headaches after exercising.

For the last couple of months, about an hour or two after exercising I get really bad headache.

I drink about a gallon of water a day. Almost no caffine. (NO SODA POP)

I am at the gym about two hours 5 days a week.

Is anybody else having this problem?

It feels like sinus pressure and sometimes will stay around all day regardless of what med I am taking.

Thanks for any insight..

A couple of things come to mine. Blood pressure?
No matter how fit you are, hypertension can strike.
Also if you are in the gym 5 days a week did you consider that you may be over training.

My guess is that you are dehydrated. I have the same problems it is not an everyday thing but it happens enough now that I know when it starts what I need to do. Mine is a sinus like headache feeling with a slight tightening or stiffness in the neck and shoulders. I usually drink a Gatorade and then drink the same amount of water (1 liter Gatorade 1 liter water etc. ). It takes a bit but it will usually take care of it within an hour. I drink the Gatorade to replenish any electrolytes, It may not be the correct thing to do but it works very well. If I just drink 2 liters of water it doesn't seem to help as much. Do not let it go on for an extended period drink excessive fluids if that doesn't work then get to a doctor to see what it is. The only problem I find is when it happens i hydrate myself real well, then a bit after I start feeling better I start peeing. Have to pee million times but I feel better so no big deal.

Drink more water during and after your workout your body is used to the gallon you drink and uses it as it always has it needs more when you put a strain on your body by working, exercising, etc. .... Usually you can't drink to much water.

Good point, I do have high blood pressure now 145/80.

I used to push it really hard everyday but now I training at 1/2 the load weight on weight machines and on cardo I cut back about a 1/3 of the speed and take it easy.

Is there anyway to solve this?

I had a big problem with cramping and headaches last summer when it was really hot here. I got rid of it by taking in extra electrolytes in the form of tablets. I was pushing too much water and it was flushing them out of my system. Try the 50/50 mix of Gatorade/water and see if that helps. You might also want to check with a medical professional.

Good point too. When I do drink gatorade it does go away but I wanted to keep away from the stuff since it has so much sugar.
I know I am hydrated since my pee is almost completly clear and never yellow but I guess my electrolytes are low.

Also I take potassium pills and bananas to increase my level of potassium.

Strange I can workout all day because my muscles never get tried but the one muscle I am not using my brain is the first to stay stop.

If you are concerned with the sugar in gatorade check out powerade. My buddy uses it and says it has lower sugar and sodium numbers. I haven't compared them but it might be worth it to look at them both next time you are in the store.

I'd check with your doctor. 145/90 is where my pressure was but it would spike pretty high during exercise. Would get bad headaches. Doc (my cousin, so I trust him) said either back off the exercise or start on meds for the pressure. Started meds and have had no headaches since. I take 1/2 a pill a day and pressure runs about 115/70 now. No real noticeable side effects.

Used to get head pain so bad that I'd have to lay down and take a nap for it to go away; felt like a migraine, even looking at bright lights made the pain worse. I'd probably get one or two headaches a week and haven't had one now for months.

I have this big time: even looking at bright lights made the pain worse

I guess I better talk to the dr.
Thanks.

Only thing to be careful about is de-hydration when you're taking the meds. Most of the HBP meds are a form of a diuretic. They reduce the amount of fluid in your blood, lowering the amount of blood and reducing the pressure. If you workout hard you'll lose even more fluid and your pressure will drop real low, making you feel like crap. Just want to find a lazy-boy chair and stare into space. First time it happened to me my pressure dropped to 90/50 and I could hardly walk without feeling light-headed. Called doc and he said to drink a quart of Gatorade, Right Now.

It becomes sort of a balancing act but if your pressure is causing the headaches, you should work something out.

FWIW, my pressure jumped quite a bit in one year. One physical it was 125/80, next year it went up to 145/90, with an occasional 170/105 for no reason that the doc could pinpoint after complete physical. I'm about 5-9, 160 lbs., no smoke, drink little, decent condition. Go figure. Well, I do have 2 teenagers. I like to blame everything on them so why not this.

My blood pressure was perfect until 35 (37 now). I was taking Niaspin to lower my trigs. Well my over all blood chorstel was 165 before and now it is 145.
I thought my blood chorstol was fine. I think the meds screwed me up. I stopped taking them. Told my old dr. to pee off.

I quit Diet Coke about a week ago and I think I have lost about 10 pounds of fluids in my body. Pee about every 2 yours... I have lost more weight not drinking caffine.

I need to check my blood pressure to see if has changed. I do know that if I skip a day I do not get headaches.

I know you said it's been a couple of months of this, but the cut back on soft drinks and sudden weight loss could have something to do with it. Like most everyone else said, talk to your Dr and see what they say. Also, consider drinking the gatorade/powerade/water, or whatever you drink all through the day. NOt just during and after. Forcing the fluids all day will keep you hydrated and keep electrolytes up ever before you go to the gym.

Sports drinks with less sugar and lotsa water will usually solve that.
