Head Gasket Installation

New to this awesome forum.
I was hoping to get some info. on how to install a new head gasket.
I have an 83 CJ8 Scrambler. The difficulty I am having is there are no posts on the block to hold the gasket in place when maneuvering the head in place. The side posts that go to the manifold are getting hung up. See photo. Is it best to take out the exhaust and intake manifolds?
Thanks for any help!

Try to tie the header and manifold out of you way bailing wire works great for this, I hope you had the head machined to avoid any future issues?

Engines run either pins or hollow dowels to index the head. Once your block is cleaned, tap the dowels/pins into the holes and slip the head gasket over them.
These dowels are designed to keep the head from "floating" after installation. They will help keep your gasket in place.
