Keep the 1911!

All i know is that i would never sell the 1911. It's my single favorite semi pistol of all time.

Just carry the 1911. You may have to adjust where you keep it, but there are holsters and shirt systems out there that will allow carry for a 1911 very well.

Immediately I realized how much better the H&K fit me. I'm not saying the SA XD is better than the Sig. Some people want the Sig for it's name. If that's the case buy the Sig over the XD. My advice is just to not rule out the less expensive XD until you've shot both the XD and the Sig.

For me, I'll shoot my Springfield over my 229 any day of the week. It just feels so much better in my hands. Accuracy wise, they both shoot very similarly, and reliabilty, they have been identical.
To be clear, I never meant to imply the XDs are bad in any way. I would not hesitate to recommend one. They make a very good first pistol (after a .22) and most won't appreciate the advantages the Sig brings to the table.

I do shoot the Sigs more accurately than the XD and I think they are more inhently (mechanically) accurate. But as you say the difference is largely the feel. That is something I am very picky about and the polymer framed pistols don't tend to fare as well that way. The only plastic pistols I enjoy are the HKs and to me even they are not as nice as a good Sig. The HK P7 OTOH

If you ever do get serious about picking up a 1911 (You will have to pony up a lot more than $100 ), Try get your hands on a Dan Wesson before you rush right into a Kimber. They are priced right in the meat of Kimber's line up (a lot cheaper than many Kimbers) and yet they have much more to offer IMHO. Unlike Kimber, who never saw a part that wouldn't be better in MIM (metal injection molding=cheaper), the DW has zero MIM parts. All the springs are top notch Wolff Chrome silicone. Many small parts are made by Ed Brown, a maker of $1800+ dollar semi custom 1911s. The frame and slide are finish-fit by hand tightly and smoothly. The feed ramp is hand polished to a mirror shine. And...

I had a Kimber. It was a good gun. My Dad has a Springfield. It is good as well. My buddy has a Colt. I wouldn't mind having one myself for a future custom project. But the DW outdoes them all for accuracy and especially for feel. My 2 cents....

Here is my Compact on my hip:

IWBs can keep 1911s under cover pretty well. If you get a good one, they aren't all that uncomfortable.

Keep that 1911, its gift and a very special one at that. Sell off your other guns and get an XD.

I've heard a little about the Dan Wesson guns too. I know almost nothing about handguns though. I'd like to pick one up sometime in the future for defense and a little target shooting. I've always liked the LOOKS of Kimber 1911's, but I don't know anything about them. The one you posted is a nice-looking gun too. Once I get to the point that I'm seriously going to buy one I'll be doing a lot of research and shooting of guns before I make a decision.

Thanks for the input. I'll keep the DW's in mind when the time comes.

Keep the 1911. You will regret selling your fathers gone someday when he is gone...

Never sell that gun...hand it down.
