Everybody needs a 1911 in .45ACP in their collection.
If you get a SIG for CCW get one with the DAK trigger.
Personally I'd get a Glock 36 for CCW.

Keep the 1911 and save up for the Sig. My Dad also gave me all the guns I have. I sold one of them when I was in college, basically for beer money. I regret that to this day and will NEVER trade or sell another gun that I own. Your Dad will appreciate the idea that you wanted to keep "his" gun even if he never says so.

.45 ACP isn't that expensive. I've been picking up factory loaded ammo at Walmart for about $10/box. You could also pick up hand loading to futher reduce costs. While a 1911 is always a good addition to a collection, they do require some practice to shoot competently.

keep the 1911... just wait till you can afford the Sig.
x3+ on the XD. it has a similar structure as the glock or the S&W MP. but the XD is a whole lot better in performance IMHO

Since everyone is singing the praises of the SA XD, I'll chime in too. I've had 3 of them, and currently have the sub compact 9 and the 45. Absolutely awesome guns. The sub 9 is my second favorite handgun that I own.

I'd still keep the 1911 if it were me.

Anyone who would trade in a Colt Gold Cup for a cookie cutter Sig is either on crack, or is an escapee from the looney barn, and should be reported immediately.

I agree with keeping the gun your dad gives you. He may not show it, but it will hurt if you get rid of it. I have the Winchester 20 double barrel that my dad gave me when I was 9. I'm now almost 49(in three days) and I have had many offers to trade for expensive guns. Very tempting, but I wouldn't get rid of it for anything.

So get a .22 conversion kit for the Colt!

If it is anywhere close to an heirloom or if your dad has had it a while and is very fond of it then DO NOT get rid of it.

I'd keep the 1911 because it's resell value will probably only go up.

It appears the peanut gallery says you should keep the 1911.

I agree with the peanut gallery.

Are 40s that much cheaper to shoot than 45s?
Are 40s that much better than 9mms?

Keep the Colt. Pack the Hi-Power till you're flush enough for the Sig, if that's what you want.

Not to pick a fight , but have any of you XD guys shot a p229? I would trade 2 XDs for one 229. But again, I wouldn't trade a Gold Cup for a Sig, Unless it was a 210

To the OP: Your Dad is giving you a Python too (eventually)?! Your Dad Rocks! My Dad has a couple guns he said he was going to leave me, but then he decided he would rather give them to me now so he could watch me enjoy them. Then he changed his mind again and decided he would rather see himself enjoy them for a few more years!

About 6 months ago my dad gave me a '30's vintage Colt Woodsman, a 1911 Gov't Model (60's) and a Colt Python (70's era). He wanted me to sell them for him. Uh Uh! I now pay their elec bill for them in exchange. Will cost me more in the long run but I think it works well for all of us. Dad didn't really want me to sell them anyway.

Yup... I own both. My take is that in any decently manufactured (eliminate all the cheapo guns that have horrible reliability) handguns, the differences a casual (say weekly, or 2-3 time per month) shooter will see is minimal. The place where the differences are most noticeable is in the feel. My 229 was one of the first nice guns I bought. Within a week or so, I went out and shot an H&K usp. Immediately I realized how much better the H&K fit me. I'm not saying the SA XD is better than the Sig. Some people want the Sig for it's name. If that's the case buy the Sig over the XD. My advice is just to not rule out the less expensive XD until you've shot both the XD and the Sig.

For me, I'll shoot my Springfield over my 229 any day of the week. It just feels so much better in my hands. Accuracy wise, they both shoot very similarly, and reliabilty, they have been identical.
