Have a gun dilemma
Alright, well my dad told me what he is going to get me for Christmas. He said that he is going to give me his Colt Gold Cup 1911 .45. NOW i love this gun, but in all practicality i hardly ever shoot my current guns, and a .45 round is expensive. So in all reality i will probably not shoot this gun very much.
My dad said that we could take the Colt and trade it on a Sig 229 .40 which i would use to carry and it would be come my main pistol. So, here's my dilemma... I could either keep the 1911 or trade it on the Sig. I love the 1911 because it shoots nice and it's nice to have since it's getting hard to obtain, but i will hardly ever shoot it. But I also love the Sig, and if i get the Sig it will be pretty much my main pistol, and i will be able to use it for whatever i need (ie: concealed carry, shooting range, social shooting events). My concern is i don't want to regret getting rid of the 1911 down the road because it is a great gun and a cool one to have in my collection, BUT i really would like to get the Sig and have a good all around gun i can use for everything. SO... what do you think i should do, keep the 1911 or get the Sig?

Can you not take the 1911 and then trade one of your other ones and maybe throw in a little cash too so you could have both? I mean do you really need two .22's. You might also check into the XD's 9/.40/.45s they are awesome guns and can be had for around $500 at most shops. Not to mention if you went with the 9 or the .40 you can get it in a sub compact with the 3" barrel, it's the ultimate conceal carry weapon in my book.

Ditching the 1911 would be a dumb thing. Slow your shooting until you can get something you can shoot cheap.

I gotta agree with what others have posted. I'm a handgun freak myself, and have guns that I totally dig. BUT....... your pops gives you a gun-- you take it, and keep it to pass on to your son, God willing. Put it aside. Shoot it if you like, don't shoot it, if you like. But take it, and never even consider selling it.
If you want the 229 (which is one that I own-- still prefer my HK to it though , then save up and buy it, or as one of the other said.... trade + cash one of your current guns for it.Respect Pops. Take the Colt and keep it until you can pass it on. I've got two daughters, and if either of them ever take firearms as a hobby, I would be forever grateful to be able to pass some of my guns to them. |

Keep the Gold Cup. You can ALWAYS go down and have your ffl order up a Sig. Good luck replacing the gold cup.
My Dad had a Colt Python years ago. He sold it to buy a Winchester Model 70. He was going to buy another Python when he had the $$$ but the prices just kept going up and up and up.... Then he retired and the dream was over. He could have easily picked up a model 70 any time in those years but the Python was special. My sister, my Mom, and I had a hell of a time finding a Python we could afford to make his Christmas AND Birthday dream come true last year and it is not as nice as his first one. Don't get me wrong, Sigs are great. I just wouldn't trade a Gold Cup for one. If you can't afford to shoot the Gold Cup much it will just be worth that much more in 10-20 years! Edit to add: GE2 makes a good point. This is your Dad's gun. That will mean a lot to you later.

well all my guns are actually from my dad. They were all given to me on Christmases. And my dad is actually encouraging me to trade it on a Sig, so i know it wont hurt his feelings.
As far as trading my other guns, the only one i can see doing that is with the ruger 45/22, but for what it's actually going to be worth i would be better off keeping it for when i have a kid or something like that. I guess I'll just hold onto it for now, and if a deal comes up later for the Sig i will weigh out my options. And even if i do get rid of the 1911 i dad says that the python is mine when he dies.

I'm pretty set on a Sig, i really liked shooting dads P239. The gun is a bit small for my hand which is why i am going to go with the P229. I also like all the features of the Sig... double action and hammer release especially.

When my Dad past this past year I inherited one of his prized possesions and I know I will never trade it, it will go on to my oldest later in life. It may not seem like much to most, but he bought it when he was 16 years old and kept it immaculate, it's an old High Standard Double Nine, nickel plated .22 revolver. Beautiful gun, I was glad to get it, but not especially under those circumstances. But no matter what guns I own, and I have 9 all together, that one will be my most treasured. ![]()

He's probably encouraging you to trade it so you can get something you want. He's being generous, just take his gun and buy the sig one later.
