Have any of you ever quit your job and gone back to school full time?

How'd you swing it?

Was tough, went back to school with a wife and 3 kids. First 6 years of undergrad I worked mainly nights while wife worked days. I had to fit school in around kids schedules. Why undergrade took so long. When I got into pharmacy school I had to quit and go to school full time. Grandma watched kids during the day while wife was working and I ran a firewood business from home on the weekends and late nites. That went on for 4 years. Just get the mindset that you will do whatever it takes and it will happen. It was worth putting life on hold for 10 years. Good luck

I am doing it right now. I am getting the GI Bill, though, and working part time. I have a wife and two kids. It is difficult at times, moneywise, but I know it will pay off in the end so it is worth it.

Currently doing it myself also. Left the Navy after 6 years and have been a full time student for the past 2 years and will continue for the next 3. The GI Bill definitely helps, also wife is supporting me, no kids thank god. Like 69cj5 said, you just have to have the mind set that it is the most important thing right now and you will be able to get through it. I say go for it.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

I wasn't in the Armed Forces, so I'm guessing that student loans are the only way for me to go. I make over 50k a year, and have found out that grants are unavailable for me.

I still owe 3 years on my Jeep. So I'll need $ to keep paying on this. How are you guys without GI Bill help paying for school?

If you do quit your job and go back to school you can do a one time "change of circumstances" FAFSA and then you may qualify for grants. It will depend also on other sources of income, i.e. wife's income, parents income (if you're under 24), etc.

I cashed out my 401K and used it to pay off my car payment and all of my credit card debt, so that my bills were mostly wiped out. Then I took student loans, and got a gob selling computers at Best Buy. I couldn't hack it in the retail world (I had a nasty habit of telling people the truth, rather than what would sell computers, lol). I quit that and am now back in the industry I was previously in, although with a fat raise and much more desirable job. I'm just going to go back to school part time the rest of the way, probably after summer.

I got laid off and went back to school full time. GI Bill saved my butt. I think I'm about to try it again, and lean on GI Bill once again. I got lucky and got Ch. 1607 GI Bill benefits from being activated with the National Guard.

I'm in school full time but only for the first time around. From what I've seen and heard going back to school after being in the "real world" is very very tough. Good luck to you all going back for second helpings.

Go Razorbacks!

Im another navy school guy. I have chapter 31 vocational rehabilitation. I am considered 50% disabled from the navy so they pay for my school and supplies and books 100%. I also get a stipend of 650 a month while I am in class. I dont know what it would be like if I were paying for school by myself, I can imagine it would be tough, as even now I have to work 20-40 hours a week just to make the bills. I am hoping the ****ty situation now will pay off in the end as I am sure it will. Good luck and make it worth it.

I'm in school for my second time around. Didn't finish the first time and kicked myself ever since. I got laid off last year and decided it was time to go back and finish what I started. I ended up in a different major since being out in the workforce I realized what I really liked doing. I found an overnight job with decent pay and they are allowing me to do all the homework I want while I'm there. It was rough getting used to the overnight hours but I don't have to do any homework when I'm home. Definite bonus. It's worked out for me seeing I've been on the Dean's list the last two semesters. The only part I don't look forward to is repaying these school loans!

If your committed to it then don't ever give up. You'll regret it later.

soup.

I gave up everything I had and rented a tiny room in a basement 2 blocks from my school. Student loans covered my tuition and living expenses. I had $700 a month to budget for food, rent and entertainment which when you're an engineering student... entertainment doesn't come around often.

the payoff?

amazing job in oil&gas that got me a second house under 2 years, all my jeep mods within those two years (19k worth of parts and labor), home reno's that are continuing and a BMW I will have as soon as I find one I like for a good deal.

You can't lose by going to school. The sacrifice is temporary.

I quit school, worked full time for 3 years and then went back to school full-time. 2nd time around it took me 3 years to finish my undergrad. 1 full year at a 2-year college to prove I was a changed student. and then 2 years at Georgia State University to finish.

I was lucky, I was living with my girlfriend at the time in the home she had bought. She was able to make the mortgage payment herself, so I paid her cheap rent. 1/2 what it would have cost me to live in a dorm or an apartment. I had no car payment. No previous debt.

I earned money by turning my last full-time job into a part-time one. I had worked for a landscaping company for 1 year when I decided to go back. I had a long talk with the boss, and was allowed to continue working part-time. So I made sure my class schedule was all on M, T, F and maybe just 1 class on T R mid morning or so. So I could work T R and then S and even Sun if needed. Worked out really well, and since I was running one of the crews I could even study on the job sites.

Oh and I married the girlfriend....
