IMO, the only thing sex ed does is give a kid a greater feeling of guilt AFTER they have sex. Before and during...the last thing going through their mind is what the health teacher said in sex ed...

its no different than speeding, drinking, etc. Very few people actually weight the pros and cons of their actions prior to taking the action...

We love risks especially good feeling ones..

It is funny that we live in a country that teaches students about every kind of birth control except the only one that is 100% effective. lol

no birth control method is, teaching abstinence is a complete failure as people will have sex, even when young, it's a biological desire. however with condoms the negative side effects: std's, unwanted pregnancy can be avoided

europe has a much more open attitude towards teen sex, lower ages of consent and education covering all aspects, and have std/teen pregnancy rates that run about HALF of what the U.S. has.

it's easy to think, if teen pregnancy st'd are a problem let's just make it illegal and tell them not to do it, and not think let's teach them to be responsible.

I agree with the fact that its pointless to teach this stuff. I'm not saying it because I like to go out and bang every girl I see (quite the opposite actually) but because this is America and people do what they want no matter what you tell them. Theres laws about not talking on cell phones while driving...I counted 10 people today on the phone and it was during a SNOW STORM!! Its illegal to drink and drive yet there are many deaths a year involving drunk driving...my buddy was one of them. Sure the teachers can waste thier breath and tell the kids not to have sex but it comes down to the kid making the decision anyway. Instead they should teach kids about making better decisions and factoring in consequences...or even better, just not teach anything and give out trays of bacon during class

We'll see what happens.

What i do funny is that apparently there's been a huge increase in back-door action due to abstinence-only kids that do it because it preserves their virginity (well, and adult media).

abstinence only is stupid. It basically teaches that condoms do not work and never will and you are guaranteed to get an STD or HIV if you use a condom (rather than abstaining).

In the local school district they teach kids about birth control, the rhythm method, and even demonstrate how to properly put on a condom, but they are not allowed to mention abstinence because of the "religious" over tones.

I am a proponent of education, especially when no one is picking and choosing what parts to teach. To me, this is just another example of politicians interfering with the job of educators and using funding to get their way. The kids are already in health class, why does it take special funding to approve teaching material in a class that the students already attend?

It doesn't matter what you teach them anyway. Kids are going to ****, its fun and free. The only thing that should be taught is the risks involved and how to reduce those risks, eg: condoms.

True story, In high school I dated a girl for a little while, and of course we liked to fool around, it's fun. Her mom was the health/sex ed teacher. I remember sitting in class hearing about abstinence, and later that night after a movie practically swinging for home plate with the teachers daughter. I was 15. And from what I hear from most of the previous generation at work it was basically the same story in the 80's, and it's still the same story. It can't be stopped, it can only be forced into the shadows.

every study not funded by the catholic church has found abstinence only education to be a failure. they also found that kids who sign those virginity pledges are significantly more likely to engage in risky sexual behavior and have sex earlier than their peers that don't sign those pieces of paper.

Comprehensive sex ed includes teaching abstinence. Abstinence is, as you say, the only 100% effective birth control method, and that has been taught in every sex ed program I have ever observed

Abstinence only programs, on the other hand, teach completely false information about every other method of birth control. I have seen it taught that condoms have a 50 to 80% effective rate when used correctly at preventing pregnancy, and that condoms offer no protection from STD's. This is flat out dangerous. Besides the fact that we already know that these programs don't prevent kids from having sex, abstinence only programs teach kids that using readily available methods of protection is futile! So guess what... they're not going to use them! "Hey kids, we're gonna tell you not to bang each other, but since you're going to anyway, make sure to not bother using a condom or anything else!"

Are we seeing the problem here?

Being an educated teen, its easy from my perspective. Teens are going to get anything they want, no matter what you do to stop it. FACT.

The solution? Figure out a way to deglamourize or make it safer.
-Hand out condoms and pills at highschool AND middle school clinics.
-Invest in a proper sex-ed class.

The biggest thing IMHO is to "get over" the view that kids will obey, and not have sex. Thats just ****ing stupid.

1.5 Billion dollars wasted in an ignorant old fashioned lifestyle, pathetic.

so, you advocate teaching your point of view, but not another?

how about we say a few heil hitlers and burn a few books then too?

hypocracy at its finest.

some would say BEING RESPONSIBLE is keeping it in their pants.

If you are going to play the game, you better be ready for the consequences

at least have the balls to let people decide their own path, instead of trying to limit what is taught to them.

of course, the liberal point of view simply says that you can abort the baby if you aren't responsible, anyway.
