glock 17 vs xd-9

In about 2 months I become the age which is required to purchase a handgun and these are the two models im considering the g17 and the xd-9 (4" flavor). Why should I get one of the other, pros, cons, etc.

XD's are more ergonomic, and have more safety features. Outside of that, they're both plastic pistols that work very well.

I shoot better with an XD, go to a range and try both of them out; and decide for yourself which you like better. That said, they are both good solid pistols.

I vote for the XD, but I'm a bit biased, I have 3 at the moment, and XD-9 compact, XD-9 Service and a XD-40 Service. Try them both out, whichever fits your hand better and you feel more comfortable with, I'd go with that one.

Things I have heard about the XD are that the barrel is mounted higher on the pistol which in turn makes the pistol have more kick vs the low barrel location on the glock which is making your arm absorb more of the recoil thus in a rapid shooting situation you would have less rise.

Is there truth to this?

I am a huge fan of the Glocks. I personally dont have the 17, i have the 22 (the full size .40). I love my Glock, it has minimal kick and is as simple as can be. I know some may say that they dont like the safety because there is no external safety other than the trigger. however there have been many test done that show it is VERY difficult to set off a Glock accidentally. I have found that the Glock also fits nicely in my hand so much so that i can shoot it all day and have no ill effects. My advice do a youtube search for the glock thousand round test, aswell as other torture tests and you will see why i will be a Glock fan for a long time to come.

Have the gunsmith disassemble both guns for you. The glocks inner components are tiny the XD is a lot beefier.

Other than that. Shoot both of them. Then make your decision

I bought a Springfield xd-40 if that matters

Check out the Smith & Wesson M&P as well. I tried all the others and the M&P fit me the best. Go to your local range and shoot all three before deciding. The XD was a bit blocky as was the Glock. However, I could at least work the XD. The Glock was a reach to drop the mag and then you also have to re-cycle the slide to chamber another round. I like to drop the mag, re-load, and release the slide by thumb as quickly as possible. I can do it with no issues with my M&P.

I was going to get the glock 17 but ended up getting a Sig instead. And now I have a few Sigs

But I do really like the G17 with night sights. The sights are wonderful. I never liked the feel of an XD for some reason

i shot the xd-9 and didn't like it compared to the sig p-226. i realize that i'm not comparing apples to apples really but after tons of research it came down to what felt better in my hand. i do want to get a glock for a carry pistol once the pay checks start rolling in, fyi.

I'm a glock guy when it comes to SD. I've shot most, owned and still do own many, but when my *** is on the line the glock is what I carry. And what I carried for years on the job. Never a failure, never an issue, I trust them completely. They're not pretty, but they always work, which is more important than rosewood grips.

Safeties on a firearm are worthless. You can strap 42 different mechanical safeties on a pistol, and some retard will still find a way to shoot their buddy. The only safety you need is the one that keeps your dumb *** fingers off the trigger :rolleeys: If you can't function at that level, you should not carry a firearm. And a couple of my friends will tell you that if they have a "safe" pistol and their fingers on the trigger at bad times I'm more than happy to tell you about it after you pick your dumb *** up off the ground.

I hate my XD45, and I hate every glock I've held, never shot a glock though.

Do you want me to go into the reasons I dont like the XD?

here comes the generic response.

just save the time and go with a 1911.

Don't be a hater.

I have a XD .40 short and weak in the 3" barrel, and I love it. If you want a great pocket pistol look at the Ruger LCP. I have a feeling once I get one I won't carry my XD very much at all.
