There is absolutely nothing Simple about it or it wouldn't be the quandry it is.

We're talking about instinctual repetetive behavior that has no connection whatsoever with normal mammalian instinctual drive.

We will all fight for food, air, water and the ultimate goal of survival BUT why does politics (an invention of man) seem to rival our animal instincts.

This is a far more complicated question than "What's your party affiliation" or "Do you like the President".
It may even be uncomfortable because it asks "Why do we do something" It asks us to honestly examine our motivations and admit to Why we do something.

Why do we have sex? Answers(based on instincts):To procreate or to express affection.
Then why do we masturbate? Does it accomplish anything? We still do it.

Easier to answer. Great form of exercise. Subject of many organizations that support it as a hobby. Recognition (i.e. get ones name on elite list of who climbed XYZ mtn), adrenelin rush.

Something to show for the effort when you're done. Unlike Political Debate.

I think if it was just as simple as a human need to express or complain we would confine our pursuit to health and the weather.

It's more complicated.

Because drama makes people feel important.

People that have real lives, and important things to do, don't have time to talk about politics.

I used to debate politics all the time. I enjoyed it, and if I am speaking to a reasonable person, and by reasonable, I don't mean only those who agree with me, just those who don't start foaming at the mouth when you disagree with them. I actuall like talking with someone that I have different opinions than.

But in general, it has gotten so venomous and stupid, less facts on both sides and more foaming at the mouth, that I just really try to avoid the subject any more.

the problem with debating with a random group of people is that there is bound to be someone so set in their ways that they just don't listen to anyone but people who agree with them. Even then, they find a way to argue some little part of that person's argument and completely ignore everything else.

It really only goes downhill when someone starts putting everyone else into a general category such as left-swinging liberals, right-wing neocons, paganistic God-haters, Puritan bible-thumpers, etc.

People are inherently different, some people who SEEM to be completely opposite will agree on something else, I'm sure. We all like Jeeps. We all like offroading. That's something we can all say we have in common. The reason for name-calling is just not substantial, it's pretty much arguing just because someone else thinks differently.

I thinks its funny because "most" folks are moderately political. They reject political extremes. I see all the time, when folks say,

"I "guess" I am republican, BUT I don't share all of their views"

This has also been shown in surveys that folks reject extremes is on average true.

The fact that we have a two-party system skews this fact, you usually end up "labeled" one or the other.

However, when two people debate who are just barely left or right of the middle, the debate quickly becomes polarized (extreme for you challenged folks).

Why does this occur? Because no one wants to be "wrong" about issues that ironically have no "right" answers. Each guy wants to "out-do" his competitor, usually with a more extreme example or fact...

Its quite funny to watch.

No one wants to concede.

We debate politics because somewhere inside we each believe we are all right and everyone else is wrong. For chrissake if we could compromise we'd be better off, no?
People like bush even though he's a horrible leader, and people like Kerry because they say he's better even though I don't think he would be (he's got "plans" but doesn't detail them to anyone). Intense debate is a sign of social distress in my opinion. If everything was gravy we'd be complaining about not getting enough sex from the wife and the crappy drought in the midwest (as we cannot control weather). While you can't always see eye to eye, I think it's important to make good points and back them up. If you simply say, "It's the liberals that are always complaining" and have nothing to offer in positive to your favorite president/dictator, then you have no argument. Did it ever occur to any of you that jump to the "hang the liberals" gun that not just "liberals" aren't happy with the way things are now? Just because you hate the way the government is working (or not working), doesn't make you a liberal. It makes you a critic with a head on your shoulders.
