Gas Gouging

I pulled up to an Exxon station to fill up my Wrangler this evening. It kept going and finally stopped at 15.949 gallons. Ok....I was just under a quarter of a tank and the Jeep has a 15 gallon tank. I am calling tomorrow about this.

I don't know about the TJ models, but I know all of the YJ models had a 20 gallon gas tank with some sort of limiting tube which tricks the pump into thinking there's a maximum of 15 gallons instead of the actual 20 gallons.

My gauge is off too. When it hits 1/4 the truck dies...

Your gauge is probably wrong. Mine is way off. I have an 18 gallon tank but the gauge will read empty when I have 4-8 gallons left.

Tank capacity doesn't include the filler neck.

Who you gonna call?

the arco across the street from my house is 10 cents cheaper than the chevron around the corner. EVERYTIME i would fill up there from an empty tank it would take at least 22.5 gallons, usually over 23. So I think to myself,"I thought I had a 20 gallon tank?" After that, I filled up at chevron a few times. The main reason I was running my tank to empty and completely filling was to see if there was any difference in mpgs.

Well, in learning that chevron in fact gives me about 25-45 more miles per tank, I also took note of how chevron pumps charged me for a maximum of 19.7, most of the time below 19.5 gallons. Both the gas station pumps have current stickers from the department of weights and measures

Solution = Go to a different gas station

The filler deal has to do with CA vapor legislation.

Call weights and measures (usually Dept. of Agriculture) if there is an issue. Don't buy gas at shady gas stations either. Any reputable station has their pumps weights/measures checked 2-3 times a year and the blends adjusted that many times as well (in addition to the yearly state testing and audits they perform).

This also isn't gas gouging. Gas gouging is when places raise their price due to something like a snow storm coming to increase profits due to the induced panic of the general public. The whole "restoration" practice is also pretty similar to gas gouging as well.

Surprised no one mentioned this...get yourself a gas can (any size will do, make sure the size is labeled on it) and fill it up to the fill line. If the pump shows more gallons than the can, then you have a case.
