Garbage Disposal Stuck?

Alright so my disposal is seized up not sure why but I know it works because I can hear the motor trying to turn when I flick the switch. I have heard of some sort of tool to get it un stuck. Anybody out there with suggestions?

use a bigger hammer. If it doesn't fix it then it'll need to be replaced

Stick your hand down in there and while trying to spin it by hand turn the switch on. That should do it.

Disclaimer, don't do what I just said it could cause them to void the warranty of your disposal.

Look under the disposal. The motor shaft should be accessible. Insert a hex wrench in the end of the shaft and turn to clear the obstruction. They usually come with the hex wrench. If not it's probably about a 3/8" hex wrench.

could have some crap stuck in the blades. We had a shot glass go down and get crushed a little bit ago, bits were sticking the blades...it sucks but you can stick your hand down there and see if the blades have anything jammed.

probably jammed. Get a big *** flat tip scewdriver, stick it on one of the blades and tap it with a hammer. Worked for me

If you can't find the wrench for it I would suggest using a broom handle to try to force the issue. Good luck.

Grape has the best way to do it but if you want to waste some time you could always disconnect the disposal unit from the bottom of the sink then take the top part of the unit off then look inside and remove whatever is jamming the blades. If nothing is jamming the blades then you might as well go get a new disposal unit since you already have the old one off. Now if you are really mechanically inclined.......follow Grapes advise.

put the handle part of a plunger in there and rotate the blade.

Are you sure. The motor may be spinning now but the blades may not. They could be jammed up still and all the wrench did was shear the pin off allowing the shaft to spin freely. Now is when you need to put your hand down in there and turn it on to make sure the blades are spinning as they should. Make sure you run water while your hand is down in there checking for blade spin. You need to hold the blades firmly before turning them on. A friction fit on the shaft can cause the blades to move when not loaded with food etc... So hold the blades solidly when you turn it on so you can make sure the shear pin is still holding strongly.
