Gaming Computers.
I'm thinking about buying a new computer since my old one crashed a few months ago. The main thing I will be using it for is to play Counter Strike Source and maybe a few other online games, anyone know of a good gaming computer for under $1,000?

Your best bet is to probably buy all the parts yourself and build the computer. Newegg.com is a great website to grab pc parts from for a good price. If you don't know what you want or what to look for, check some prebuilts from Dell or something to compare the costs of building it yourself or buying a pre-built one. There are also 'suggested' builds available online that you could look at.

Wow, after looking at that newegg.com site, building a computer sounds fun. I'm just not sure if I could do it or not. Is it as simple as buying a case and plugging stuff into it? What all is required?

Step-by-step guide. Another guide. $800 Gaming PC Guide (though I'd recommend 2GB of RAM for it). |

It's MUCH cheaper to build your own and it's really not that hard. Just make sure the motherboard/processor/memory/video card are all compatible.

That fan is enormous.
Reminds me of how badly I need a new case for mine...the one I have now is like a sauna.

Not my taste (I like more plain stuff). But Thermaltake makes good cases and thats a steal for that price (after rebate of course). Regardless, this is probably the best time of year to buy pc parts because of all of the Christmas deals. Either way, buy the best parts you can with your budget because you don't want to skimp and have to spend more money upgrading your pc in 2 years than you would have on just buying a better component that would be adaquet for its lifespan. I built a pc 4.5 years ago and its still going strong and works great for my needs (1 gig RAM, 3.4 Ghz HT P4, 80 GB HDD, ATI Radeon 9600, XP Pro, etc). However, I'm going to buy a Lenovo T61 next summer for school and that should be a killer laptop.
Another thing I forgot is to check the reviews on stuff. I take Newegg's reviews pretty seriously and have bought based on them before and have yet to have a bad experience with a component or item for a computer. |

Where's Dr. Marneus when you need him? He has the coolest computer case I've seen.

I wanted one for the same reason. I checked out Dell and bought the cheapest possible. It came with 2GB ram. Pretty decent graphics card. 520GB HD. All for the total of around $550.
