Free maps for your GPS

For all of you with a GPS and the basic map that came with them, check out GPSFileDepot. They have all kinds of maps that you can download for free. I downloaded all the Topo maps for my Garmin. These are the 24K maps not the low res 100K maps.

I was able to load Topo maps on to my Nuvi GPS. You need the Garmin map source software, but you can get it there as well if you don't already have it.

I know this works for Gramin, not sure of other brands.

Make sure you download a map also. Mapsource won't run without a map loaded.

You have to download the map source program and the map data separate. then it will work.

Most states have a sort of GIS clearinghouse where you can get satellite imagery for free. The problem is cutting the data into a format that your handheld (or computer) can read.

For New York: NYS GIS Clearinghouse

DeLorme's XMap can cut the data for my PN-20, but since DeLorme opened their subscription-based service I haven't thought twice about spending $200 on software.

I am just getting into this myself, I was instructed to use google earth as it was free and there are topo maps in there already... being new to this though I am still at a loss on how this all works.

I just want to be able to put off-road map data on an SD card and use it on trail runs for reference in my nuvi 205w

any thoughts or how to's - I have probably spent the better part of 3 weeks worth of nights researching this to the point that I have nearly given up.

Most (if not all?) turn-by-turn GPS units that you would buy for your car will not do what you are looking for. You'll either need to find pre-cut trail maps (I haven't found any) or roll your own on your computer.

WRONG . . . . .

I have loaded topo maps on a couple of different nuvi gps's.

One thing is you have to zoom in closer then normal to see the details once loaded. .5 mile scale should be fine
