Forklifts hurt!!

As some of you may know, I work in the oilfield in Algeria. I've been here for a week, & we've been putting in some long days since I got here, anywhere from 12-16 hour days. Yesterday, after a full day on location, we came back to the yard & had to mix up a 2000 gallon batch of gel. The powder we mix with comes in 1000 lb bags. About halfway through the mixing I got run over by one of these:

It ran up the back of my right foot & about halfway up my calf. I fell to the side but couldn't get it out from under the front tire. They took me to a clinic where they took some X-rays, then to the hospital. It looks like one of the pivot bones in my foot had the ligament pulled off of it & took some bone with it. That was the local doctor's opinion anyway. At the hospital they put a monstrosity of a halfcast on, it weighs 25-30 lbs 3rd world medicine is pretty primitiveThe hospital was unbelievably nasty. It smelled horrible & there were lots of fluid puddles on the floor. I was supposed to fly home today, but a big sandstorm blew in. Hopefully I can get out tomorrow. All I know is it's going to suck flying home with this cast on. The crutches they gave me are maxed out on length & they're still 2-3" too short. I guess I'll have to get the cart treatment going through airports.

I'm flying home to Oregon, about 16 hours of air time, plus about 5 hours of layovers. At least I'll spend the night in London, so it will break it up a bit. I just hope the wind lays down long enough so we can fly tomorrow. Today, all 3 flights that were supposed to land had to turn around & go back to Paris or London. Sandstorms suck the big one.

That sounds exactly like what happened to one of my coworkers here. I saw it happen.

Except substitute forklift with fire engine.

It rolled up the back of his left leg, and from my perspective it looked like it ran him totally over. I thought I had just watch someone die.

He lost a third of his foot and three toes. The docs wanted to cut his leg off from the bottom of his knee down. His career is over and he has to use a cane for the rest of his life.

I am glad you are ok, and definitely consider yourself lucky.

pansy, walk it off.

seriously though, I had a guy I worked with get hit like that one time, his was bad and took a while to recover from, but yours sounds worse (he just tore a ligiment and the towmotor didn't go up his leg as far, just clipped the back of his leg at the ball of the heel). Good luck man

Good luck to you man, I hope they haven't botched anything in trying to fix you up over there...

A friend of my parents had a motorbike accident in Oman and broke his arm, medics took him to one of the not so good hospitals where they set his arm in a cast... NOT STRAIGHT. He ended up going to Switzerland where they had to re-break it and set it again properly.
