File Backup

How can I be sure that all my files are backed up? Im sending my laptop in for a new motherboard and they said I cant keep my hard drive. How can I make sure that all of my data will be safe? Can I make a hard drive clone on my 30gig ipod?

Get an external drive, and a copy of GHOST. I GHOST my main drive to a slave drive once in a while, then unplug it. When my drive crashes, I won't lose everything including my settings.

Just realized that I already have 40+ gb on the comp and I havent even had it for that long... does ghost copy the entire hard drive byte for byte so I can just restore it and all of my settings and files will be exactly where they were before?

They're going to search your HD for naked pics of your gf/wife/SO and other goodies.

Recently a news channel did an undercover report on that. They sent in a computer with jpeg files titled "sexy" or "bikini" or something like that and they checked the time and date that it was accessed. Usually it was accessed while at the shop. One guy claimed he accessed it to "test" the computer after fixing.

Like Spark said, it will make a perfect clone of your drive. You can plug it in and use it as your main drive if you want.

When I worked for a certain big box store on a certain 'squad' we were required to run a basic search to make sure there was no child pornography on the PC. Ended up resulting in more than a few arrests and trials.

IIRC, that's how they caught Gary Glitter.

I hate child porn as much as the next God Fearing American® but isn't that practice tantamount to invasion of privacy and illegal search and siezure?

You would think, but you should read the fine print that you agree to when you leave your computer for service. You basically allow it all with your signature.
