Fast cars for under 10K?

I have been doing some thinking, which usually ends up being an expensive thing to do. What are some fast cars that get decent gas mileage and are under 10K? And in decent, I just mean better than the Jeep.

EDIT: Or cars that can be bought and built for under 10K

Get an '88 mustang for $1500 and put $8500 into the drivetrain.

A Fox chasis Mustang is hard to beat. I have had one for over 20 years. They usually get in the low 20's. My current one has 2.73 gearing. With such high gearing, it gets 25-26.

well, as much as people on here will probably hate hearing this.. you could build pretty much any late 80's to mid 90's honda and make it pretty darn fast for 10 grand..

also.. mitsubish eclipse, eagle talons, can be made very fast for that kind of money...

those would be pretty easy to do.. you could build a 240sx, but i think youd really be pushing the 10grand limit.. an sr20det swap in a s13 s14 s15 chassis is the cats ***... the 240 is the mustang of Japan!

on to domestics... of course you could build a fox body mustang for under 10 grand.. or you could do the camaro or trans ams too... but then you have to get a gold chain and show off your chest hair while cranking "white snake" out of you pioneer 6x9's

Im sure there are a ton of other options.. but I will leave that to the others..

our C4 corvette got up to 28 on the highway with the 6-speed and averaged about 22. plus it was a little fast. they can easily be bought for under 10K.

The fox body x3. When I owned mine the only thing that ever broke on it was the serpentine belt and that was simply lack of maintenance. Cheap parts, easy to work on, great mpg to hp, fun to drive, nothing like the music from the exhaust, I miss mine. Actually bought the jeep instead of another one.

or you could go real cheap, get an old horizon drop the turbo motor from a mini van of the same era and you could run 9's all that for around 3k

Or you could get an LT-1 camaro for $4000, put $800 worth of parts (valvetrain) into it, and kill the mustang.
