Educate me on Streaming Video

I'm building a new house.

I've got a minor child living in the house.

I don't like cable TV anymore, and we watch the same crap far too much.

I want to stream all of my video.

I have access to fairly high speed internet (5 or 8 Mps)

I've got an Xbox 360, but no other streaming capable devices.

What other devices/services do I need to purchase for TV programs/Movies?

Has anyone else cut the cable cord so to speak? What kind of set-up are you using and how much/what kind of viewing are you using it for?

I've been looking at this.

What do you have to do to catch "Justified" or "The Walking Dead?" I don't mind to wait a season.

Well, I'm back on this again. I've been in the new place for a couple of weeks. I've just about got all my old Home theater stuff back together.

We've been using the laptop for what little TV we've watch. So far so good. Last night we wired it to the HDTV and it seemed to work ok.

I'm thinking maybe next I may install Plex. Anyone using it?

Also, anybody got a recommendation for a wireless mini-keyboard?

Computer is free while Netflix is behind a paywall (Gold account) on Xbox. Also some UI features as every company custom-develops their own Netflix app.

Yeah, I'm settling in on the computer for now. I've just got to do something about all these remotes and get a wireless keyboard for the computer.

Roku. $40 for the unit and give you access to pretty much any streaming media. We have Netflix, Hulu Plus & Amazon prime. All said and done I think we pay about $20 month compared to the $95 we were paying for Direct TV.

Another choice is Apple TV. I used it for a couple years. Apple had some free content and low cost content back in the early years when the device used a hard drive. They gradually eliminated the free content and raised the prices of the paid content. Last year I used Xbox live and Amazon Prime for a while. There was not much free content that I cared to watch. I remember seeing lists of really old shows. How many times can you watch Married With Children?

In retrospect with Apple TV and no cable TV subscription I saved some money over a couple years, but always having to download something prior to watching it was a nuisance, and the viewing experience felt directionless. It always left me thinking, "What should I view or download next?" At least with cable TV there is a program guide and DVR, allowing you to channel surf or switch to recorded content. Eventually I sold the Apple TV and got a cable subscription. I currently have U-verse for $50 a month and I could not be happier. I do not watch a lot of TV anyway. I spend more time watching youtube videos on my computer than I do watching live or recorded shows on an HDTV.
