Driving with no side view mirrors
Is it illegal to drive with your doors off, b/c of not having side view mirrors? I want to take my doors off, but I remember reading a post some guy wrote that said he got a ticket for driving with his doors off.

There have been several post regarding this matter. And I was concerned at one time myself, so this is what I did:
My brother is a local Sherrifs deputy here in NC, and i had him check on this for me. He told me that "the book" say something along the lines of: "In a passenger vehicle (under 10,000 lbs) you must have a clear line of sight through a rearview mirror. If no rearview is present, the vehicle must have a side mirror on the driver's side." Thats pretty much all it stated. He also gave me the general statute number and told me to keep it with my registration in the event that I did ever get hassled about the lack of mirrors. Not sure what state you're in, but you could always just stop and ask a cop. (Might want to do it with the mirrors on the Jeep though.)

In my other car, I drove around with no side views because they both got whacked in the high school parking lot. In Texas as long as you have the rear view, you are in good shape to drive, but at inspection time, you have to have at least one side view (driver or passenger).

Here is the link and statute for mirrors in NC
http://www.ncleg.net/Statutes/GeneralStatutes/HTML/ByChapter/Chapter_20.html § 20-117.1. Requirements for mirrors and fuel container. (a)Rear-Vision Mirrors. - Every bus, truck, and truck tractor with a GVWR of 10,001 pounds or more shall be equipped with two rear-vision mirrors, one at each side, firmly attached to the outside of the motor vehicle, and located as to reflect to the driver a view of the highway to the rear and along both sides of the vehicle. Only one outside mirror shall be required, on the driver's side, on trucks which are so constructed that the driver also has a view to the rear by means of an interior mirror. In driveaway-towaway operations, a driven vehicle shall have at least one mirror furnishing a clear view to the rear, and if the interior mirror does not provide the clear view, an additional mirror shall be attached to the left side of the driven vehicle to provide the clear view to the rear. Hope this helps everyone, at least here in NC. Happy Naked Jeepin'!!

So, Parrothead, doesn't that say that you gotta have a left side mirror?

§ 20-126. Mirrors. (b) It shall be unlawful for any person to operate upon the highways of this State any vehicle manufactured, assembled or first sold on or after January 1, 1966 and registered in this State unless such vehicle is equipped with at least one outside mirror mounted on the driver's side of the vehicle. Mirrors herein required shall be of a type approved by the Commissioner. Better safe than sorry, I'll be ordering brackets from here: http://www.jeepit.com/ ![]()

In regards to GS 20-126(a) The last line reads this:
"Any inside mirror installed in any motor vehicle by its manufacturer shall be deemed to comply with the provisions of this subsection." Which in turn, contradicts 126(b). Thus, by this sentence, as long as you have a rear facing mirror with an unobstructed view of the vehicles rear, This should constitute as operating a motor vehicle in a safe manner. That is, providing your not an *** to the trooper if you do get pulled. Good luck with the relocaters, but I think I'll take my chances. Happy wheelin' and hope to see ya on the trail sometime...

but...there is a mounting attachment you can buy to put the mirrors on the windshild. What's bad is this about removing mirrors...call me a dumb a@@, but while changing lanes....i THOUGHT i was looking into my side mirror, and saw nothing..and almost creamed a pickup by freaken inches... Of course i got the infamous finger flipped at me..but i'd rather have that , than hitting somone at 65mph.duh! |
