Driving on the beach?

Hi,

I'm going to the Outer banks this summer and planning on taking my 4 door on the beach ( a lot). What do I need to know about driving on sand? I have never driven on sand before.

Thanks

don't stay park to close to the water too long.....you might sink in or get stuck hours later. But that was in a truck last time for me.

I think 4 high will be good I think

Air down, keep your speed up, look for damp sand to park on, avoid nailing the throttle.

Air down to about 25 PSI. What "4 door" do you have? Stop and help stuck people when you can. ALWAYS slow down to a near crawl when you are driving around people. Carry a RECOVERY strap and good lights in case you get stuck there at night. Anything else you want to know just ask!

Remember to get some good pictures!!

air down, carry proper straps don't floor it you will only dig. My personal opinion and choice when you find a spot back into it. Makes leaving a whole lot easier. Also tread lightly

Also if you air down either know where the closest air station is or go buy a compact cheap air compressor so you can air up some before driving to far

A 4 door what? 4x4 or 2x4?

A lot depends on the sand. Conditions change w/time of year and weather. The bigger/wider the tire the better. Air down... psi depends on type of tire, but generally, lower is better. If U don't have 4wd, then stay on the packed semi wet stuff... if U don't and get into soft sand, then your gona get stuck... airing down won't help.

I've helped/pulled many a newbie out of sand cause they did'nt know how to read the stuff or drive in it.

FWIW... I run about 5-6 psi! but that's in the dunes.

Side note: if anyone has seen the lastest Pirates of the Caribbean, the part where Jacks ship slides down the sand dune to the ocean is @ Devils slide near Pismo dunes... but thanks to the wonderful Sierra club, that area is now closed!

Watch out for the idiots in the huge lifted trucks that can't take them anywhere else but the beach. Don't run any kids over. Bring food, drinks and a trash bag to clean up your own crap.

If you fish you now need a license to do so in North Carolina. Out of state is only $30 for a year. If you are heading up to Corolla stop in Bob's and you can buy it there with some bait.

Drive smart,,,,,along with everything else that has already been said in the above posts.

Take beer and a designated driver!! Have fun!!

Beach = rust. Make sure you wash the underside off well when you're done.

EVERY time, as soon as you get back to wherever you are staying. And don't EVER drive through the water (on the sand back roads is ok because that's mostly fresh water)
