Dodged the bullet today....
Got an email today saying that I was going to PCS to Minot AFB, ND. Hadn't signed my re-enlistment paperwork yet. Had been putting that off because I had applied to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Of course the week after I applied Staff Sargeant promotion results came out and somehow I made the cut without trying (first time). So then that confused the hell out of me. Couldn't decide to re-enlist or get out. Then I get this email. I start to make frantic phone calls, people basically telling me I would be forced to make a decision. Embry Riddle doesn't review applications till november so I get even more frantic. Who wouldn't if they found out they were going to minot. Called Embry Riddle, told them my situation and they said they would call me back. Ten minutes later they call back telling me I was accepted. So screw Minot, I'm getting out!

Congratulations. I got a letter saying I was going to Minot too, so, I got out instead of reinlisting. Looking back on it, I wish I would have stayed in. That is my single biggest mistake so far.

Minot isn't that bad, could of been Thule or Clear--- that would of sucked!
So were you in for five? Do take the time to think about the choice, there are some very good benefits in staying in if your in the right job!

us civilians need an explanation... what is minot, thule, etc? and are you learning to be a pilot? none of this military jargon!

Sorry, Minot, Thule,... are Air force Bases...

Minot Air Force Base, ND
Thule AirForce Base, Greenland
Clear is in Alaska

Clear, Alaska (??)

The assignments don't last forever...It just seems like it.. I spent a year on the DEW line and it was a great experience.

I got out and went back to school, it was the best thing for me and my family at the time. I had made SSgt and TSgt first time also and people thought I was crazy for getting out but sometimes you just have to go where you want to go.

Congrats for getting into school and thanks for your service to this country.

The military can be a great career for a single guy, but its hard to raise a family on an NCOs pay. I think you made a good decision if you have a family or intend to have one. Its not like you can't go back either. And with a degree you could go back as an officer.

I would have taken Clear, Alaska over minot any day. It sure was a tough decision, I am going to miss so much especially deployments.
