The wave tradition started for me when I was in High School, first driving English sport cars, then a FJ40 Land Cruiser, next, big bore sport bikes and now still waving in the Wrangler....Whew!

I live in a small town, i usually initiate the wave when I see the (respectably)"old farts" in their rusty, beat up cjs. But you know what? ...I secretly get a real ego boost when the kids wave from their tricked monster trucks It happens!
But yeah, not much love from the JKs or either of the Hummers in town. But I try.

I always wave at the Wrangler crowd....JK's are a different story around here. Not sure if they are the upgraded soccer mom car bunch and don't know about the wave or maybe they are better than the 'older Jeep' model crowd. Either way I quit waving at them...if they wave first then I reply. Probably about a 50/50 return on all other Wrangler drivers in this area.

I wave at every rig with a winch. And every vehicle with a super hot wench driving it . Stock tires usually mean that they wither deliver mail, or that they have no idea whats going on.

something else i thought might be relevent to add .. we have a little sea-ray ski boat, and in previous years, you would get more waves on the lake than in jeeps and on bikes combined, but i noticed over memorial day weekend, that the wave had dwindled. i think it is that people are naturally just becoming unfriendly, regardless of their vehicle. which is a shame considering there are still a few niches around like jeeps, bikes, boats and anything else that people feel an automatic connection with. but i guess that's how it goes as time changes.

Here are the rules for the wave

The Jeep Wave: An honor bestowed upon those drivers with the superior intelligence, taste, class, and discomfort tolerance to own the ultimate vehicle - the Jeep. Generally consists of vigorous side-to-side motion of one or both hands, but may be modified to suit circumstances and locally accepted etiquette. Examples of commonly accepted modifications:
Top off: One handed wave above windshield or outside body tub
Top off during blizzard: Shiver and nod, hands may remain frozen to steering wheel
Southern/rural locations: Raise fingers from steering wheel, nod
It's not what you buy, it's what you build and what you do with it.
In keeping with this cardinal rule of Jeeping, categories have been established to account for each part of the equation.
These categories are:

The Jeep Waving Hierarchy: Based on the vehicle itself. Takes into account the nostalgia factor, the discomfort tolerance quotient, and the amount of owner dedication required to maintain the steed.
The Modifying Sub-categories: Based on what you do with your Jeep.
Equipment Adjustments: What you build.

Jeepin' Wave Rules

These rules are an attempt to make it easier to facilitate the mandatory wave when coming in contact with another vehicle of the Jeep nature. Though there are several variations of the waving rules, the following were designed as an easy to remember guideline for when to wave and who should wave first.

Rule 1:
If you are a driver or passenger in a Jeep vehicle, and you come in contact with another occupied Jeep vehicle you should wave. If the vehicle is not occupied, the wave is optional.

Rule 2:
Be the first to wave. Don't wait, just wave.

Rule 3:
Be forgiving. Sometimes the occupants of the Jeep receiving the wave are not paying attention, distracted, or are paying attention to driving. We all know how you can get lost in the euphoria of driving a Jeep and forget about the outside world.

Rule 4:
Wave vigourously. When cruising at 55mph towards a vehicle going 55mph it is sometimes difficult to see the 'over the steering wheel' wave. Get that hand out and make it seen!

Rule 5:
When you are the recipient of a wave, return the wave.

Rule 6:
Sometimes Jeep owners forget they are not in their Jeep and wave by habit. When occupants of non-Jeep vehicles wave, returning the wave is optional, but usually a good idea.
