Disappointed in your dad

What has your dad done that has disappointed you the most? For those of you that are dads, what is the thing that you have done that has most disappointed your kid?

My dad stopped contact when I was 7 because I forgot to call him I guess. I brought him back into my life about 4 years ago, and he's pretty much a racist *******. He also disregards my wife because he thinks I'm too young to be married. (I think he just wants me to go out and do a ton of people like he never did)

Can't think of anything...

I finally caught up with Pop a few years ago - he and Mum got divorced after the Big Asian Vacation (he was drafted, sent over as a medic, and got mortared at month 11/13. Still has some fragments in his head...) and he was worried that I'd be mad at him.

Until I caught up to him, and told him what I'd been doing in the Air Force all those years. I understand why he did what he did far better than he first thought - the main difference is that A) I wasn't drafted and B) I didn't get married until I was off Active Duty. Kinda makes things easier than trying to keep a marriage going when you're on the road twenty-eight days out of thirty...

Took me not quite ten years to get better decorated than him - but he had the benefit of an "undeclared" war to work with, while I had to find my own fights and disasters.

Situation that is happening right now...

I have a cat, which is my first real pet ever. I got her when she was a kitten and weighed less than 2 pounds. Next year I am renting a house that doesn't allow pets, so I was hoping that I could keep her at my parents house for a year until I get out of school and am able to take her back. Also my sister absolutely loves the cat, and she would be overjoyed if she could keep the cat for a while. I take her with me when I go back home and everyone likes having her around...except my dad.

Well, my dad is 100% against it...as always it is his way or the highway. He isnt thinking about me or thinking about his daughter, just himself. It really isnt much of a surprise, because he is very selfish. He cares about his boat more than his family I am pretty convinced of (I am 24 years old, in college, responsible, and have never been in trouble in my life and he has never let me take it out). Anyway he said he would move out if the cat lived there. I joking told him to start looking for a new place to live. And he said he would and didnt even give a ****.

He really is a prick to my mom as well. He never does anything nice for her, they never do anything together, any and all words they speak to each other are combative. My mom is about the nicest and easiest person to get along with and talk to, and it really makes me angry that my dad is how he is towards her. I do wish they would just get a divorce, she doesnt deserve to be unhappy. I think that when I do buy a house that I will ask her to come and live with me for a while just to get her away for a while.

Growing up he always really kept to himself and didnt teach me much. He was content with doing projects by himself and not getting me or my two brothers involved at all...I really hated that. Didnt teach me to change oil until I was like 19. Even now with my sister, when I come home I do as much as possible with her..take her on bike rides, shoot hoops, play wii, etc. and my dad is pretty much nowhere to be found (usually in the basement watching tv, or in his room watching tv). The only thing substantial that he taught me was what kind of dad I should not be.

There are much more to being a dad than just paying the ****ing bills.

Not once.

If i turn out to be even just a fraction of a man that my dad is, I will be a remarkable person. He is everything that I can only hope to be later in life.

This is pretty personal, but chances of ever meeting any of you is slim.

I think I may have all of you beat. My dad left my mom for another man about 4 years ago. It would have been disappointing enough if it was another woman, but him being gay took alot of getting used too. I still have trouble with it.

Nope, Everyone keeps telling me I'm becoming my father. I take it as a compliment!

wsuwarrior, easy fix to your situation. Rent a house where you can have a cat.

Mom fired Dad when I was 6; Dad sulked alot and drank quite a bit --- then got remarried to an alcoholic. He was a cop so he smoked and drank himself silly for a long time.
Cleaned himself up and got married for the 3rd time to a very nice woman. But it was a bit too late and he finally succumbed to cancer at age 68.
He was really a nice guy that liked to hang out, camp, and shoot pistols. Getting saddled with Mom is what messed him up and he never recovered...

X2

That's exactly how I feel. My Dad has had a really difficult life, but never used it as an excuse. Instead, he worked extremely hard to make sure that we had the life that he didn't. I'm always proud when people say that I'm turning out just like my father...
