I have a Winchester 9422 in .22 magnum. It's the older style glossy bluing, and the action is like rubbing two silk pillows together.

I killed a deer with my winchester 94 30-30 this past weekend, that was the first deer kill I have made with that rifle. I enjoy the open sight challenge, but my favorite hunting rifle is my win. model 70 chambered for .270. I have killed many deer and hogs with it, never once missed anything.

Anyways, the .223 doesn't go hunting anymore, and I'm basically just slowly building a rock-solid combat rifle out of it....(should be getting better rails and a light for Christmas... )
I hope you aren't comparing it to a 270 Winchester because it's not even close. It's on the low end of velocity for 270 caliber cartridges. And at most from the AR platform it looks like 115 grain bullets are max and the 270 Win can go upwards of 180 grain bullets, quite a difference. I won't go into the age-old argument of using a 223 for deer but I think you know the reason the deer wasn't kind enough to leave a blood trail for you.

oh, i know...it's just a necked down .270, but it is pretty hot. And no, I wasn't comparing it to a .270 Win....

yeah, the one deer I did get w/ the .223, the bullet was lodged up against the skin on the other side....just barely didn't pop through....It did pretty good, though, it was a 6-point and it only ran about 25 yards and dropped dead....

I killed my first deer at age 9 with a Ruger mini 14 .223 My sister also killed her first deer with a .223 It's all about shot placement. Under 100 yds it will kill one just as good as .270s '06's etc. and do less damage to the meat. These days I shoot a Win model 70 supergrade in .270 so I can reach out and get 'em on the long shots

Well, it is true it is about shot placement being critical, but most of the unwashed masses of hunters out there aren't capable of it. Most only shoot their rifle right before the season starts and some only when they put the sights on the deer for the first time. Like I said, there are tomes of arguments over the effectiveness of smaller calibers used on deer.

One the other side though I witnessed a guy empty his Marlin 44mag into a deer and never hit a vital to humanely kill it. That was 16 shots IIRC and upwards of 10 hit it. His brother and I had to track it for 1/2 mile before it bedded down and we could dispatch it. Point is not always do larger calibers or correct shot placement equal a clean kill.

Got mine when the company first started... IIRC, I paid about $375.oo. At least they're not $4000-$5000 anymore... like when after the Quigley Down Under movie made everyone want one. I should have sold mine then... I could buy 2 now!
Almost ordered it in 45-110!

IMHO, I would'nt push it past a couple hundred yards. Even in a rifle, it starts droping energy pretty fast and shoots like a rainbow. I'd use it for close in hunts if it were me. In fact, I once owned a Browning 44... kicked the dog crap out of me, so I got rid of it and got something else!

Range for deer? I'll shorten Rockworms distance to under 100 yards. It may be accurate enough to go further but the effectiveness drops off quickly.

If you hit a whitetail at 100 yds it's going down...At 100 yds it still at over 1000 fps and 600ft lbs. The gun is designed for heavy brush hunting not 200 yd open shots. If you find yourself hunting in thick swamps/brush it is a great round. I use a Ruger 44 mag Carbine and love it!

As far as recoil is concerned, my Ithaca LSA-65 .270 out kicks the Ruger 2 fold.

not the greatest pic... but it should make a few of ya jealous!

I'm a little jealous. I've wanted a Shiloh Sharps for years.
