Culture clash over sexy cyclists

This raises some interesting problems.

"Leaders of South Williamsburg's Hasidic community said yesterday that bike lanes that bring scantily clad cyclists - especially sexy women - peddling (sic) through their neighborhood are definitely not kosher."

http://www.nypost.com/seven/09122008/news/regionalnews/hasid_lust_cause_128750.htm

As I see it, since it's a public street, they really have no standing to demand anything - as I've said before, nobody has the right NOT to be offended.

They have to avert their eyes anyway, so I don't see what the problem is.

yeah, i'm not getting what the big issue here is. if their religion condemns looking at certain women, then I'm not really sure why they are living in the middle of NYC. Amish have their religion and customs, but they aren't moving into cities and complaining that they should build them sanctuaries and places where they can carry out their religion and practices.

Sounds like they are forcing their religious views on the public. You can't ride on my street in anything less than fully robed dress, because it might make me have impure thoughts.

I don't agree with a lot of what I see on TV, or when I go into the city for that matter, but I'm not nieve enough to think I could change it even if I wanted too. Something I did find interesting last week at church, our paster said, "There is a fine line between living in the world and being of the world." In other words, you can live in the world and deal with things around you and accept them for what they are, whereas being of the world means that you are a part of that world and it's wrong doing and can't tell the difference when confronted with it. Now this is a tricky area, because depending on your faith, wrong doing is a subjective term. If your inner convictions don't tell you that a scantly clad woman riding a bike is wrong, then how can you be a wrong doer?

So these people that are offended by those riders have a faith based inner conviction that is telling them they shouldn't be looking at those women because it could cause an impurity. But I say if their faith isn't strong enough to allow them to see that and not be impure then they need to pray about it and develop stronger convictions, not try to change society, because that's an impossibility.

I can tell you the difference from my perspective based on my experience. I like to look at the female form just as much as the next guy, just because I'm a christian doesn't mean I'm not a man, and I will admit in the past I have had issues with looking at women and thinking what I would like to do to them. Technically this is a sin to me because I've commited adultry in my heart. It takes a lot to look at a beautiful woman and not think like this, however it can be done. I can still look at women and admire their atractivness, but not be lustful toward them. It's a fine line but can be done. Sorry, didn't mean to turn this that way, but it just kind of flowed out.

Yep, they need to think about why there is temptation in the first place. Not meaning to make this a religious thread at all, but there's power in taking temptation and dominating it. You get freedom by conquering temptation. In a way, it's a gift because it's an opportunity to excel and rise above, but a gamble if you can't do that.

And really ken, you're very tactful with your wording.

When I lived in Miami we would hold a Sunday Service at the bandstand on the beach boardwalk everyonce in a while.

Many times people walking or roller blading down the beach would stop and liten to the singing and music or preaching. Some would be very scantily clad as was their lifestyle. Hey, we went into "their house" what right do I have to come to "your house" and demand how to live! We just were glad they enjoyed or were interested in the music or preaching enough to stop and give us a few minutes of their time.

Most of the time it was just hurting people who want someone to talk to and we gave them an ear. Not a bad way to spend a morning.

We made no demands and they made no demands.

It was our choice to be there and it was their choice to listen or not
"that's all folks"!

Hasidic Jews seem to be similar in beliefs to Muslims and fundamentalist Christians.

Well, I still don't have power but I'm at my brother's house.

Are you saying it's not true that they're extremely conservative? They don't even allow men and women to sing together, hence Matis Yahu not being able to perform with Mary J Blige or whoever.

Are you saying that religious people are the only extremely conservative people around?

Hasidic Jews, fundamentalist Christians, and fundamentalist Muslims are all conservative because of their religion. So what's the problem? Is pointing out the parallel between those groups of people so offensive to you?
Most non-religious people don't care about scantily clad cyclists... In fact, I'd say being socially conservative without being religious is extremely rare.

People should rejoice their beliefs, not mourn them. God loves me because I am his child. He knows I am a sinner, but i live the best I can. And there is no reason to come down on yourself for something natural to man. One can only ask for forgiveness and just keep working hard to support yourself and your family.

Sorry for the preaching there...I personally feel the body should be celebrated, not hidden away, and if someone stays in good or great shape then they have earned the right to let people see that. But that goes back to the right to not be offended issue. Lets not start another one of those threads.
