Confederate flag and conf. statues

Years ago my alma mater...University of Mississippi got rid of one of our symbols, the confederate flag. During football games confederate flags used to wave in the stands...it was an incredible sight...not racially motivated....it was just a symbol of the Ole Miss Rebels. It had been used since I believe the 50's. Due to bad publicity for the school and an effort to recruit more students to the school Ole Miss did away with the confederate flag. I understood this when it happened...it was offensive to many people and it has been good for the school.

Next they got rid of Colonel Reb....the school mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels since the '60's....this was not taken lightly amongst Ole Miss fans....it was also deemed as offensive and taken away from Ole Miss....

Along with this...they limited the number of times the band could play "Dixie" ,one of the school songs, during football and basketball games....also deemed offensive.

In Oxford and on campus there are 2 statues of confederate soldiers. These statues were placed there in honor of the people who fought and died in the civil war. Lately there has been some discussion amongst city officials to also get rid of these statues...they are not there to offend....but there to honor. I am completely against this along with the majority of my town.

The question is how does everyone feel about these symbols...the rebel flag, mascots, songs and a statue honoring fallen soldiers? Do you think they should be gone from the history of my alma mater and town?

I think it's complete BS. People are so **** sensitive nowadays it's ridiculious. If you don't like the statues there then don't move or visit there. It's real simple. This goes for all the **** going on these days from the conf. stuff, to god, to anything else people get offended by.

I'm with you 100% and I hope those statues stay.

ah, the PC crowd is striking again. ok, i can see the removal of the confederate flag. i have no idea what the old mascot was so no idea. but limiting the playing of dixie? does that song have some sort of secret racist meaning? and the statues should stay. they honour war heor's. so what if they were on the wrong side of the war. they were standing up for what their side believed.

i say fight it as much as you can.

I'm not sure how I feel about all that happening. The flag thing I can kind of understand but taking Col. Reb was too much and to get rid of those statues would be really stupid (but it is Ole Miss we're talking about).

We fight some of the same problems on our campus with the purple and gold confederate flag. There is always a big debate about it every year. They can't really ban if for the tailgaters and flags are already not allowed in the stadium so nothing really is going to happen.

I'm originally from Poughkeepsie NY, I didn't understand it at first either but after living here for 11 years and learning the history behind the civil war and the South I see why these men were honored.

We honor the founding fathers of this country. They were also traitors when they decided to fight against the British.

HOTTY TODDY! I'm also in Oxford.

I was opposed to losing the flag at the time (early 90s) and felt and still feel it could be a positive symbol of the evolved south, but I realize it's too strong a symbol and others will never ever be able to see it that way, so I'm glad it's not used anymore. I think getting rid of Colonel Reb was stupid. "Dixie" is just a great song of regional pride and has nothing to do with race to the people who have loved it over the years. Critics say it was written by a white guy in a dialect like a black slave, which is offensive, but those of us who have loved the song never knew that, so how could we be using it as an expression of racism?

The founders of our country were slave owners or at least condoned the practice, up until the Civil War era. But you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater by saying that everything having to do with a culture or region is horrible because of the one abominable practice that, unfortunately, was a symptom of the times. Or if you do take that approach, you have to erase all monuments to our U.S. founders for their slavery practices and genocide of the red man.

I'm so sick of these whiny a$$ crybaby people that the whole freakin' country has to walk on eggshells around for fear of offending them. Don't do this, Don't say God, Get rid of Santa, Don't say happy holidays... etc. etc. etc.

Give me a freakin' break.

The statues should stay.

This seems soo ingnerant to me! The rebel flag is not a symbol of racism. There are people who use it as a symbol of racism yes, but the civil war was not just about slavery and racism. That was 1% of what the war was about. It was more about states rights and trade than anything. And by that time in the south there were many free blacks who actually owned slaves. People need to be objective, I am offended that people wear T-shirts to their knees and I have to see ther boxers or that I have to hear ***** this and ***** that, but I am not going to take away their freedom to do such things. I mean you are cheering for a team.. I guarantee that the rebel flag, a civil war soldier, or Col. Reb has never ever enslaved these people who complain. They have zero ties to slavery, they have no more ties to it as I do to the Romans taking over Europe or the Crusades.. it is just stupid, people need to research what slavery and the civil war were and what it was about. That was a battle flag, where people fought and dided for what they believed in its what makes America what it is, it wasnt a Flag that that was only put up when slaves were to be beaten or anything like that, matter affact you most likely never saw the confederat flag on a plantation home. Ok im done

Southern soldiers (as heros), and their cause have not stood the test of time. Sorry, that's the way history works. If the South had separated, the get to be heros. Since they lost, they get to be labeled as nothing more than traitors who wanted to own other human beings.

We don't call our traitors from any other war heros, do we?

What is with the South? I'm from NY, so I really don't understand. We have given WWI & WWII a rest, and we're now allies with ALL of the countries we fought in those wars.

Up yours damn Yankee! Shut up, you all talk way to much. I'm serious, shut up.

So what you are saying we should remove all the WW1&2 monuments?

What about all this "crap" http://web.infoave.net/~donbarb54/ww1/dataframe.html
