Confederate Flag

Well, after being scolded by white2door I've decided to make a thread about the confederate flag, seeing as how the thread about wanting to see jeeps with confederate tags in the Picture Request section has turned into a history lesson/e-civil war. In that thread, I simply asked why some people like to fly the confederate flag on their vehicles. I got about one decent answer. I'm not some yankee who thinks all southerners are dumb rednecks, I just was, well still am, sincerely interested in the reasons why some people fly it on their jeeps. I couldn't care less, I don't think the flag's dumb, I don't find it offensive, or anyting like that. Hell I listen to just as much if not more country than a lot of people around here. I'm in no way, shape, or form "against the south", so you guys can chill. Anybody feel like explainin' things to this southside chicagoan? Without freaking out on me?

For different people it means different things. Yeah, some people (white supremacicts) fly it because they see it as slavery days. Some people fly it because they had relatives who fought in the war. I fly it because it stands for rebellion. Standing up to the government. The federal government may come tell you what to do, but they might have one hell of a fight on their hands, so they better fear us, the people. For years before the "stars and bars" were adopted as the flag of the Confederacy the South Carolina state flag was used, as SC was the first to seceed, so any other states involved in what they called "The war of Northern Agression" adopted South Carolinas flag. And the term "redneck" was adopted when a group of non-union coal workers armed themselves against a group of thugs in Virginia who were forcefully keeping other coal workers from joining unions. They wore red bandanas to distinguish themselves on the "battlefield". The Army actually had to be called in to restore order, but they became called "rednecks".

The right for states to decide if an economic choice is good for them or not instead of the gov't doing so...

Not a bad idea in the current times, eh?

Ok, I gotcha. I think I definitely would be flyin' it if I had any relatives fight in the war. Well if they had fought for the south that is lol. Hell that means your relatives helped CREATE american history. I'd be damn proud of that too.

I've always been a big fan of the flag. Not as a racist symbol and I"m not from the south. I"m a NE boy my whole life. I"m a huge Dukes of Hazzard fan. LOL. So ever since I've seen it on the roof of the General Lee I"ve had quite the fascination with it. The subject of the stars and bars is always gonna be a touchy one. People say heritage, not hate. Others only see it as a racist symbol. The two sides will never agree. Some just like the flag and others don't care. The Civil war wasn't about racism so I really don't equate that flag with it. The reason its thrown into the racist category is because stupid groups like the KKK use it as one of their symbols. A few stupid people always ruin it for everyone else.

Why is that? Again, just curious, I don't want this to turn into a pissing match.

That is, honestly, the best answer I have ever heard regarding this topic.
Unfortunately, I don't think many other people fly the flag for the same reasons you do. But I do accept the fact that, to different people, the same symbol can stand for different things.

Representation? They wanted representation?
Or did they want the North to stop housing troops in their houses?
Maybe they saw the North's taxes as oppressive?
Actually, I don't think it was any of the above. What rights were being denied the Southern states that could possibly justify them seceding?
