I hate having to silence ourselfs for politicall correctness. If some one says "Merry Christmass" I excpet a respone, doesn't have to Christmass, it could be "Happy Hollidays' or "Happy Boxing Day" or "Happy Hanukkah". Being tollert to other peoples belife is not ment to remove your traditions or cultures, it should be accepting and understaing other people's beleifs and culture.

I don't understand why at work I can't say anything else besides "Happy Holidays" but I can always say "Happy Cinco De Mayo" It's not even a ****ing US Holiday.

Well, technically no one really celebrates Christmas for what it is. In 1820 retailers created the holiday as a day for gift giving.

In 1820 retailers took Saint Nicholas and created a gift giving holiday to drum up sales. In 1860 the actual image of Santa Clause was created by Thomas Nast in a magazine.

So this holiday really hardly has anything to do with religion anymore. Infact if you were to ask the general population what Christmas was about, very few would say anything about the birth of Christ.

Tis all fine with me. Personally I feel that religion has no place in todays life. But that's my opinion and we're all entitled to ours.

all religion is anymore is just a commercial enterprise anymore. with the various segments of Christians trying to attract customers. the churches should just follow the lead of corporations and merge, they all believe pretty much the same things except for which mythological being to idealize.

happy holidays ftw...

People can talk about how commercialized Christmas is and yadda yadda, but people are only able to take away the spiritual part if you let them. The fact that Macy's has a Christmas sale doesn't mean that I can't celebrate Christmas for what it is (or ought to be, depending on your point of view) - a religious holiday.

Btw, people have been celebrating Christmas long before 1820. Thousands of years before. If you want modern proof, just look at the Revolutionary War-era descriptions (50 years before).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas

Not that Wikipedia is the end-all of reliable information, but I know many people won't read anything else. Besides, you could always click the references if you want "real" sources.

No one knows exactly when Jesus's birthday was, just that it was somewhere in the spring. That doesn't keep us from choosing December 25 to celebrate his birth and life. Look at a lot of people, orphaned children for example, some don't know when their day of birth is, so they pick one to celebrate it. Doesn't really make that much of a difference in the end.

Where do you work? If it's christmas time, I don't see what's wrong with saying merry christmas...

I don't know why anyone would get upset by the words merry christmas. It's a national holiday for crying out loud. Though the way this is whole political correctness is trending, I wouldn't be surprised if it stopped being one someday.

I think that saying Christmas or X-mas says something about someone. I try not to treat them differently, but I have a right to my opinion about them.

I work in retail and my company has never told us not to say Merry Christmas to the customers. I usually tell people to have a nice Holiday, if they say Merry Christmas to me I respond with a Merry Christmas in return. I also believe the so called "War on Christmas" is ridiculous, yes it is a christian holiday but it is also a secular holiday and as usual the christians want to force their beliefs on everyone. Like it or not everyone is not a christian and alot of people do not celebrate Christmas at all. The Jewish faith celebrates their holidays at this time of year as do other faiths so Happy Holidays works.

^ Yeah, in the space of a couple weeks, there's Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years, and a Muslim holiday called Eid of Sacrifice. To most strangers, I just say "happy holidays." It's all-encompassing. It has nothing to do with trying to denigrate Christianity or taking Christ out of Christmas or any of the other crap these whiners who constantly need their butts kissed for being Christian complain about.

The fact about many religions having holidays at this time of year is a good one. However, I don't understand why people should not be able to say Christmas Tree and say Holiday Tree instead. What should we call a Menorah, a Happiness Lamp? Usually I just respond how people say it to me. If they say Merry Christmas, I say it back. If they said Happy Eid, I'd say it back. But taking away the identity of any of them and melding them all into one holiday, I won't do.

That's fine with me, what other people want to do with their personal lives. I just find it ridiculous that businesses should dictate that all religious references should be erased.

I must be the only atheist that doesn't take this personally. I don't see christmas as religion being shoved down my throat. I saw it in my son's eyes yesterday morning when he was opening gifts from us, and "the one" from santa. Some people spend it in church, we spend it around the tree opening presents. That's cool... You do what you do, I do what I do.

Christmas/xmas offensive?

Causing offense; arousing a visceral reaction of disgust, anger, or hatred.

I think people that get angry when they hear the word Christmas or X-mas says something about someone. I try not to treat them differently, but I have a right to my opinion about them.
