You can find running xjs for about 1k (or less) and they are the perfect size hunting vehicle, plus they are very reliable and easy to work on.

I would have said a Sammy, but if they're too much $$$, then???

personally, I don't even use my Jeep to hunt... have a 4x4quad!

Don't know about back east, but U wont' find an FJ40 out here for under 2K!
They're getting fewer and fewer these days.

Quads can be a might chilly round these parts. Last trip it never got out of the back of the truck.

I found a really nice FJ40 on CL a while back for $2500, but was the 2nd caller on it. It was going to go straight to ebay for 7k if I had been first. But alas, it was not to be.

While I say "old Toyota" for the durability, I can't agree if you are looking for cheap. Around here, even a rust bucket 4WD Toyota that is able to pass an inspection will bring well over $2k.

See if you can find an Isuzu Rodeo. I had a couple of them when I was in the car business and they are pretty tough monkeys. Plus they're cheap.
