The mid-late '70s Honda CB series are bulletproof and dirt cheap. Highly recommended.

Agreed. A lot of the older Japanese 4 cylinders are pretty reliable. Also, the older parallel 2's are reliable as hell, but are a bit smallish and maybe not so great at highway speeds.

I just bought a 1977 Kawasaki KZ650-B1 for $850! Already runs, but I have some stuff I want to do to it before I start riding it (Obscenely long blinkers, looks like the aliens from Pitch Black.. Gotta replace 'em!)
Good luck, always check ebay. Someone will be giving away a jewel for cheap (like how I got mine).
Good luck!

Look for some 70s or 80s bikes.
The Suzuki GS series, Yamaha XJ series, Kawasaki KZ series and the Honda CB series are all great bikes! My friend has an 1981 Yamaha XJ650 Maxim and its a great bike, I almost bought it but I liked the styling (and couldn't pass up the price!) of my '77 Kawasaki KZ650-B1

Exactly. I cut my (street) teeth on an XJ650 Maxim, then went to a CB650, and currently have a GS750 (chopper) in my stable

I learned to ride on my friends XJ650, but being shaft driven, it didn't fit well with my plans on a cafe racer so I bought a KZ650.
I love the Suzuki GS series, and I wish I coulda gotten my hands on a Honda CB, but they aren't cheap at all.

buell blast. New ones are cheap so I imagine used aren't bad. They have a decent riding postion, less vibration than most 250s even with one cyclider, and well their fun. great commuter bike

Yeah, they are pretty quick. I remember when I finally was getting comfortable on my friends bike I took a turn and once I straightened up I just twisted the throttle all the way and before I could say "Holy ****" I was on the other side of the parking lot doing probably 60mph+ (didn't look at the speedo, had to stop and turn or id hit grass).
My friend bought his for $350 I think with 6k original miles and after a bit of elbow grease had a great working bike. I think it didn't even cost him $300 to fix it if I remember right.
