Cassius Clay

Just sitting here in a daze early in the am before work. I see on the news he is getting yet another kind of award. He looks worse than ever and I don't know how he functions. He is one of the greatest boxers of all time but also one of the biggest cowards. In my mind his denial of God and Country negates any of his other achievements.

Putting his decisions aside, what his disease and boxing has done to him is pretty sad. I saw him in the LA airport in '73. My dad had me on his shoulders so I could see him. He was really hamming it up with the crowd, flirting with the girls, playing with some kids and acting like he was punching a pilot. The scene was pretty cool. What I see in the news now, is just a shell. Just Sad.

There comes a time when a person with such a media image needs to step out of the spotlight. When was the last time you saw Elizabeth Taylor? She got old, ill and her family/agent/staff kept her out of public view to protect the image of a glamorous celebrity. I hated seeing Ali at the Olympics, they keep dragging him out and cashing in on his celebrity while destroying his legacy, both as a boxer and one of the most courageous people in the world in a time when the govt asked too many people to submit to its will rather than stand up for what's right.

Because he became muslim doesnt mean he is "denying god". For your information, muslims believe in everything from the Gospels. That means God and Jesus among everything else. It is an abrahamic religion after all.

It's also not hard to see why he would not want to fight for his country. This was a time when blacks were still very much segregated against. Why would he want to put his life on the line for people who segregate his kind?
And i'm not even gonna get into the merits of the vietnam war itself... many people were opposed to this war including Ali.

In the end, he paid the price for his refusal to go to war. I cant understand how you could possibly call someone who has spent his whole life fighting in and outside the ring a "coward". He stood up for what he (and many others) believed in. This is one of the reasons why to this day people have so much admiration for him along with his boxing prowess and personality.

Btw, his name is Mohammed Ali. Is there any particular reason why you're refusing to call him by that name? huh?

Well then that makes Forman the lesser of the two. Hell, he (Foreman) had a brain; he should have used it and changed his tactics then. Ali was the greater of the two.

I did. Getting in the ring to box with an opponent is a little different than walking onto a battlefield with a gun in your hand. And last time I checked the Islam religion looked upon Jesus Christ as a prophet. He was born Cassius Clay and remained that until he refused to fight for his country. I am not saying I agree 100% with everything my country does but if I was called I would not hesitate to serve. Do you think 100% of our troops believe we should have went to Iraq? Do you think 100% of our troops think we should be in Afghanistan?
