Can you receive unemployment while being claimed as a dependant?

Hey guys,

I am about to get laid off work. Eveyone that i work with will be getting laid off as well and are planning on filing unemployment. In my situation, I am claimed as a dependant by my parents who pay for school. I work over 40 hours a week normally and also have a full class schedule. I am looking for another job, but i was wondering if i am still eligeable for unemployment while being claimed as a dependant?

thanks guys

It doesn't matter how many hours you work if you are not considered a full time employee by your employer. Are you in the books as a full time employee?

It depends how long you've been with the company as well, more than likely you dont qualify though.

Careful, you are dealing with the government. Their thumbs are up their butts. They don't know the rules, but they will still punish you for not knowing them.

I applied for unemployment after being let go from my co-op job. I searched, and searched, and searched to see if co-ops are qulified for unemployment. I could not find the answer so I went through the online application process assuming that if I was not qualified, it would be stated in the application process. Throughout the entire application, I was never asked if I was a co-op, intern, or any other similar type employee. I met all of the requirements, and two weeks later I received my unemployment check.

However, 1 week later at 7:30 on a Saturday morning I got a call from some lady in the unemployment department (whatever the heck that is or wherever the heck it is). Prior to getting cut off due to a bad connection, she made it sound like I was not qualified because I was a co-op. I told her at least 3 times I couldn't hear her, but she just kept blabbing away.

I never received a letter, or email, or any other phone call about the subject. I did not receive another check. I am still wondering if I have to pay the money back from the first check or if the government is going to come after me for it. Who knows because noone will answer my questions.

hmmm, interesting. you dont get paid as an intern in most cases, so i would think you wouldnt qualify for unemployment.

In terms of going to school full time and working full time and being claimed as a dependent, i am not sure. lot of different variables. I dont think you would qualify though, otherwise when i worked fulltime during summer painting, and got "laid off" for winters, i could have collected unemployment while going to school, i guess its possible though. hm..

Or you could just call the unemployment office. They also have a website.

Most interns I know get paid. I think the reason I wasn't qualified is because I wasn't considered full time. I was working at least 40 hours per week, but I was not considered full time. I did not know you don't qualify for unemployment if you aren't full time.

I can tell you about the Canadian system and it makes no difference if you're claimed as a dependant.
If you're working full time hours, how can your parents claim you as a dependant? Don't you earn too much for that to be beneficial?

I think because they still pay for school. As long as i continue being in school they can claim me until im 24 (doctorate program, etc) as long as i am still in school.

From what I recall of it all doesnt matter if your a dependant because you where working full time. Good luck getting ahold of anyone that knows anything at the unemployement office. I spent over a week calling daily about 10-20 times a day depending how annoyed I would get before I even spoke to a live person. They couldn't answer any questions I had so I got transferd around a few times found one that could answer them then said I had to wait until someone called me back. Best bet to find answers is on their website.
