Calling All the Maine Guys!
Well me and a buddy are planning a camping trip and were from Canada, down at the east coast in Fredericton, New Brunswick.
Our plan was to go up to Old Orchard Beach, Maine for about 5 days, 4 nights do some camping with the regular good old pitch a tent and the end of August. Its a ~550km drive one way. My questions are. - Whats the weather like there at the end of august? - Campground recommendations? Were both 21 so were trying to find a place with some younger people if possible. - Im guessing its a popular place for our age group? I guess there is quite a bit of stuff to do, freeport, some amusement parks, Any offroad parks? What would be some other cool things to check out while there maybe within 20-30min radius to check out? If you guys that have been there, or know of the place would be kind enough and share some information so we know what were getting ourselves into that would be great Thanks!

If you're coming down here, you need to go to Allwheels Offroad Park in Lewiston. It's great there. Many different trails with all kinds of terrains and difficulties.

I'm interested in this also as I'll be up there the same time. We're starting in Maine with hiking/climbing Katahdin, then working our way back south for 10 days.

I'm not real sure on the campgrounds. I know that Acadia has great camping. Some other ones are here http://www.mainecampgrounds.net/
As for the weather. It's usually anywhere from 75-85. If you're coming in August you should definately bring some bug spray. I am not a huge wealth of knowledge but I know that camping in Maine is a good time. |

I road tripped up to Acadia last summer. Absolutely gorgeous. The campgrounds were all full already, and it's hard to get into one (at least it was for me). But you have to hit that park. Bring some mountain bikes and ride the carriage trails, it's great. I went right about the same time you are thinking about going, and the weather was perfect. No humidity, and it actually was a little chilly at nights. But for a Canadian I bet it would be considered sweltering.
Some quick pics from my trip last year....(more in my gallery too) ![]() ![]() ![]() Oh and I forgot, Bar Harbor is right there too, it's a nice, cool little town with a row of bars and restaraunts in it, good times. Last edited by PM Thor; 07-21-2008 at 01:50 PM.. |

It might not be what you guys are looking for, but for camping, nothing beats Baxter State Park. LOTS of sites, great hiking, fishing, etc. Check out their website: www.baxterstateparkauthority.com
Mt. Katahdin is an amazing hike, as it sticks above everything else. It's also the northern terminus of the Appalacian Trail, so in August you could get lucky and watch someone finish the trail. Have fun... ![]()

We spent last weekend on Mt. Desert--there were vacancies almost everywhere--usually things are pretty full.
The Bar Harbor campground is nice--that's were we stay. Not a lot of wheelin' around the island. You can Jeep over the sand bar to Bar Island at low tide (don't get stuck--the Jeep will be under 30' of water when the tide comes in ;-) Def. check out All Wheels. I would, though, avoid the two larger mud holes if you intend to drive home. Check out our two club sites--there may very well be trail rides going on the weekend you are here. www.midcoastjeep.com www.maine4x4.org

The weather late August is usually great, mid 80'sF/30C during the day, 60F/15C at night. There is the usual bar/party scene at Old Orchard or you could go to Portland and hang out in the Old Port section, though that can be a little rough at times(or more fun
). Funtown/Splashtown is the amusement park in Saco. If you go to Freeport to check out LL Bean, keep heading south a mile and go to Gritty McDuff's brew pubMost of the campgrounds in southern Maine are bigger, family type places. A co-worker has fun at Powderhorn campground. If you had time and didn't mind adding a few miles, head inland and check out the Bethel and Rangely areas. Great camping and hiking area. ![]()

Well sounds like the place to be around that time, were going to be there for that long weekend.. Im sure you guys have it in the States as well.. labor day??
Were gonna try and stay around the Old Orchard Beach area mainly and not try and leave too much around the surrounding areas, were only taking a 98 TJ, so traveling is going to be a ***** even on the way there. But were are considering hitting up that All wheels offroad park there What else? i heard the surfing there is pretty sweet? And really how is the lady situation?

I wouldn't recommend camping in OOB if you're looking for an authentic Maine camping experience, but if you want to see our coast, it's a good place to start. The OOB scene isn't really my thing, as I'm more into staying out in the wilderness, hiking, etc. I would second the idea of camping in Baxter State Park...of course it's nowhere near the coast, but it's an awesome experience for sure. I've camped there and hiked Katahdin...it's amazing.
But, since you have your heart set on OOB, any "campground" will do, just stay away from the crowded RV parks. As for the weather, it will still be quite warm, and as for the ladies, there are plenty of them...its just a question of who's single and who's taken, to be honest. I hear that Allwheels off-road park is great, I live about 10 minutes away from it but I've haven't been yet. Plus, there are plenty of Power-line trails to drive if they aren't blocked. They often present some fun challenges. There is an amusement park right on the strip at OOB, called Palace Playland..it's pretty good. As for attractions near the beach...not much to speak of. I live an hour from OOB and I go there often, so it's same old for me, but I bet you'll find plenty of stuff to do.

Power lines are, unless you have specific permission from the land owner, off limits in Maine. Find a club to go out with while you are here or go to the park.
