Buying an SUV.

My brother recently graduated and he's looking to get a new (well, new to him) car.

He wants an SUV as we've had a Ford Explorer and Dodge Durango over the years.

Any recommendations? What models are good, which ones should he stay away from? He's not looking to spend alot (under $10,000).

Any help would be appreciated.

XJ gets my vote

When i bought my Jeep i was considering an Xterra, Explorer and the XJ (plus a couple of pickups). I'd had a Frontier before and liked the fit/finish/reliability of the Xterra but i gave the XJ a chance and it just wowed me. As for the Explorer, well, i'm yet to drive a Ford truck i didn't want to drop off of a cliff. Mostly they were in the running because everybody and their brother has one, so they were easy to find.

Don't get an SUV. Get a Jeep.

What size SUV?

If he wants a small one go with a wrangler or XJ (duh) or an xterra

For midsizers check out the grand cherokee and 4runner.

For a large SUV definitely go with a tahoe/suburban.

It really depends on what he wants to do with it. If he wants to wheel that really limits his choice, but if he just wants a sturdy truck like vehicle, then you won't go wrong with really any of the other body on frame SUVs out there.

That's true but if he does not mind spending a little more, it is worth it...
4.5-liter twin-turbo V8 with 520-horses and 0-60 in 4.8 seconds. I would not mind one for a daily driver. I just checked the pricing and it is closer to $60K - ouch.

Those are the stats for the Cayenne Turbo S, not the Cayenne S....and base price is $111,000 for the Turbo S....no options....

But yes, if you can get a Cayenne I highly recommend it...

We're not talking brand new vehicles here, so that leaves a lot more open depending on how old the guy is willing to buy

That's where I was confused. My friend was dating a girl who had the Turbo S and it was incredible on the road the few times I was in it. She never took it offroad. She liked the Cayenne more than him though because she broke up with him after a few months.

At least he was left for a Porsche and not a Honda.
