Bike Help

Im starting to seriously consider getting a street bike (motorcycle) for going to work and class, it will save me some gas and be fun at the same time. But I have ridden a motorcycle all of 2 time in my entire life so there in lies the problem.

Im going to be taking this class before I do anything, following the class they give you your liscence and it is designed for people whom have never ridden before so it sounds pretty good for me.

After that I want to get a very user friendly bike for a first bike, something that I can find relatively on the cheap so that when I lay it down I dont kick myself in the ***. I also dont need a lot of power to I want something that wont overpower me. Then maybe after this summer passes and I get better I can sell it and get one of the newer 600's.

Anybody got any suggestions on bikes? Im very new to them so year and model name would be very helpful. Thanks.

I have an 86 kawasaki Vulcan 750. It has the perfect amount of power not to much not to little. I paid $500 for it in good condition, put on new tires and perfect. What type you looking for? I love Ducati Monsters you could get a 600 or 620. They are in the 90's and cost a little bit but definitely worth it.

To be honest for the first go around im looking for something that can be had on the cheap and something that will be a great bike to learn on, I dont mind if its underpowered as the max speed limit on these heavily patrolled streets is 45mph.

Get a Suzuki DRZ S 400 (dual sport) or the DRZ SM 400 (super moto), you can drop them all day long and they wont get hurt. They will run forever and get great mpg, and they're FUN!

I would say a Suzuki Katana pre-1997 would be a great starter bike if you are looking for a street bike. They are more of a touring rider position so you are not hunched way over the tank. They have decent power but not too much for a beginning rider. Most of the people I ride with learned on one of these, they can be had pretty cheap and hold up pretty well to being knocked over or laid down. The nice thing about these are that they are mild mannered for learning but not so much that you will get bored of it right away. I purchased a 1993 bone stock back in like 99. Rode it for a couple of months, started to want more power and then upgraded by putting a pipe on it and regearing. That satisfied my power needs for the rest of that season, I sold it in the spring for exactly what I had in it and then upgraded to a CBR 600 F3, I now ride a fuel injected GSXR 600.
If you are looking at early to mid 90's machines expect anywhere from 500-2500 depending on year, miles and condition. Many I see around here go for 100-1500.

Good luck in your search, ride safe!

I just noticed this aswell, thats up there with the price range where I would be afraid to ride it because I would be afraid of dropping it.

Thanks for the links, though for a first bike it may bit a bit out of my price range. Remember I still have a Jeep and College for that matter.

my college training bike was a honda hawk, 450 or something. the belt drive and light weight made easy to handle. of course then Reagan was still a governor.
