OP here -

Back to topic, my husband loves the rental so much we are looking at buying a YJ! I'm a CJ girl at heart but I'm sure I can quickly learn to love a YJ.

Off to the YJ forum to figure out which years and whatnot we should look for...

We're just looking for some family fun. Mild offroading. Mostly camping trips. A budget lift, maybe 31's.

The kids are crying to put the rentals top down but it's raining every day this week (and the interior doesn't look like its made to get wet).

Well, if you have multiple kids I'd honestly for go a JKU. Slap some Rubicon tires and wheels on it, and a small budget boost, you're good to go.

Now if the family doesn't care about space or creature comforts... YJ all the way.
