Is being late for work normal now?
In the past 5 years I have run into the fact that more and more I notice a pattern of people coming in late for work, frequently. I think I am old school now because I am rarely ever late for work, and if I am, there is a good reason for it. I am just starting to think that this is the new normal..5 minutes late, 10 minutes late..it must be the normal thing now as so many people do this. Maybe I should start doing the same thing. Walk through the door 10 minutes late twice a week and scratch my armpits and stuff.

People are late where I work too. I'm only 19 though, I have nothing to compare it too.

Not normal, just a sign of the times; people only care about themselves and don't take pride in their work or work habits. I have an employee that was habitually late as well and lived on 20 minutes away from work. I live 50 minutes away and have been late 2 times in the last 5 years. I finally told him I've had enough, if he's late again without an air tight reason, he's outta here. Oh, Friday night football game and county fair on the way to work isn't an air tight reason - you know what's happening, make plans to leave early. Wake up America!!

It's nothing new. Been in the workforce for the last 17 years at real jobs and the only real reason i get promoted is because i show up, and on time.
When I was a manager I had a 3 times in 6 months rule. I got rid of a *lot* of dead weight employees that way.

10 minutes early is 5 minutes late in my book. I'm 15-20 minutes early to relieve first shift and I expect the same from the incoming shift. I don't work an office job so I can't comment on the "state of things", just my 2c I guess.
Every once in a while I'm a little bit late and my god dam phone rings the minute the second hand strikes 4:00.

If I'm running late that usually means there was an emergency. I arrive to work 10-15 minutes early. I been in the work force for 16 years and have been late 4 or 5 times.

Depends on the job. If other people are depending on you being there for them to do their job, you should be on time all the time. If it's a job where you work on your own then it wouldn't bother me too much if people came in a little late from time to time as long as they make up those hours.
I've worked with some people who constantly come in 15-20 mins late but then leave on time or even early! That's what bugs me.

no one depending. only reason my coworkers do not want me to quit is because they cant move up with out some taking their spot.. they are supposed to wait till i take my lunch to leave. they leave an hour early. i complain to my boss his response not my problem.why should i care about someone who doesnt care about me? i do good work and stay late. coworker does bad work ,leaves early gets more hours ,and comes in an hour late

Wait...so you told your boss that others are coming in late and leaving early and he said "not my problem" ? I'm guessing your boss isn't the owner. I'm sure someone who is signing pay cheques would want to know if people were coming in late and leaving early.

To be early is to be on time. To be on time is to be late. To be late is to be fired.
I have a 3 strikes policy. If one of my guys shows up late 3 times in a years they are fired. Its in the employment handbooks I hand out and they sign saying they recieved it and all that crap.
I do not put up with that. My guys get paid very well and if they dont want to do the simplw things like show up on time how do I know I can count on them when I really need them. The way the job market is I have no problems finding good workers.

I am always 5 to 10 minutes early and feel really guilty if I only get there 2 minutes early. I work in a pharmacy though, so it is chaos no matter when you get there. Everyone appreciates you showing up on time, so they do the same.

I always come into work early. I don't really need to be in until 7, but I'm usually there closer to 6:15. Also means that instead of staying to 5, I can leave between 4 and 4:30.
