Before you upgrade to XP SP3...

A warning to you guys, before you update to XP Service Pack 3, please, for the love of all things good, do a backup. I just tried to install it on my PC this evening (made sure drivers, software, and all relevant patches were applied) and it ****ed up my desktop AGAIN! XP did this to me when SP2 was released as well... Idiots at Microsoft manage to do it again... How can it be so hard to make sure that it works with PCs correctly? I ended up with an endless sequence of reboots that never completed. Couldn't get to the point of loading the desktop. to Microsoft. Thankfully, I transferred all my data to my macbook before this went down. Now I have to spend all tomorrow evening applying stupid patches and other **** to get to the point of attempting this again...

you should always perform a backup regardless how stupid the task, especially when fooling around with drivers or service packs.

Hmm....it's amazing what you can get away with (at least for a while) when you're number one. Makes me mindful of the U.S. automakers. Wasn't GM once the largest selling auto maker in the world but didn't address quality issues until it was too late? Now they're number 2 behind Toyota. Don't be surprised if some day Microsoft isn't looking up at LINUX wondering where they went wrong.

BTW, I own 3 American made cars (2 Fords and a Jeep) and 2 WinXP computers. What does that say about me?

FWIW - if you're a home user there is no need to install XP3. you have all of the rollups from windows update, and the only other additions are better integration with SCCM 07 and NAC from Server 08

Your motherboard bios is out of date. I just went through this issue where I work. Ran a BIOS update and updated the PC's out of the test lab and everything was fine.

My laptop is a Macbook but I keep the outdated desktop around just in case. I don't really need to anymore since I got '98 running in a virtual machine on my Mac but ya never know.

That'll suck as I work at a place that uses remote desktop to remote into the PCs to monitor equipment... Hope they realize that before pushing out the update!

^ I've looked and I see nothing that says it removes RDP Client, in fact SP3 has a newer version.
