Is it bad to put Lettuce in the garbage disposal?

My wife put a lot of lettuce down the garbage disposal and now the water keep backing up after running it for a while.

So, is it bad? I didn't think it was but I am thinking otherwise now.

You should never put too much down a garbage disposal....it is made to handle small amounts of food which is rinsed off a dish.

If there is nothing in the disposal and the water is backing up you might have a clogged pipe....it is possible there may just be some lettuce left in the disposal itself. Look in there and see if anything is stuck in the drain hole or something is stuck in the blades that is making it not chop all of the left over food in the disposal.

How much is a lot? Like an entire head at once? That wasn't such a great idea, but it may just be a little stopped up, you will just have to pull off the drain line and clean it out. After you do that run some ice cubes through it because it will help clean out the inside and sharpen the blades. On second thought do this first, then clean it out.

I tried feeding a garbage disposal a corn cob once. It didn't like that very much.

Well, she put almost an entire head of lettuce.. what was left over from tocas. I took off the pipes under he sink but there was nothing in there. The disposal is totally clean.

I am wanting to say that it is not a total clog because the water does eventually go down. I say eventually when it only takes maybe 10 minutes. All of the other drains in the house work fine.

It must be something in the drain past the disposal then.

Drano or liquid plumber. I stock it by the gallon. I don't have a disposal, so when my friends throw food down the sink I get the Drano out...again...

I don't use drano, I use straight bleach. I pour a whole bunch meaning a half gallon or more, and drop it down the drain, Then let it sit for an hour or so. AFter that, run a whole bunch of really hot water through it, and it cleans it out every time.

Some people seem to think a disposal is a garbage can. I can never get used to that as we always were on septic and didn't have one.
