Anyone here a Heavy Equipment Operator?

I really need to get my act together and get into a Job I will enjoy doing. I enjoy driving Heavy Equipment and think it would be my best bet for a career. The course for H.E.V is $10,000 though.... that's what scares me. It's only a 12 week course, so that's a plus. Anyways do you guys think it's a good career to get into?

Where you planning in going to school? ATS is the best I've heard of and may be where I'm going I'm got it all lined up I just need to schedule the dates. But have you thought of the air force?

No I don't want to get into the army/air force. I don't think I could get in because I have a scarred lung and I have asthma. There's a college near me ( Fleming College) that offers a course, and I think I'm going to do it in September.

If you do end up doing this and do well, then look at companies that work in the oilsands or oilsands construction. Also, crane operators make insane cash.

If you do come out west I can probably send a few leads your way.

Sweet deal. I plan on going for heavy equipment 1,2, and 3, CDL, and crane operating. But for the companies you guys work at? What is the minimum age you have to be to operate? I know some are 18 or 21, or 25

I have a buddy that moved to Alberta and he drives a big rig for an oil company and he's making crazy money. I'm prepared to go out there if I have too, but I'd rather stay in Ontario. I won't be doing the course until September, so I have some time to make a plan. I'm just trying to get some advice from people in the field.

I was running heavy equipment, from 1997-2008, but when the housing market fell, work got slow, then slower, theres like 500 operators on the out of work list a the local 513 union hall now, so like others have said go up north, they just don't pay enough to be a non union operator around the St. Louis area. just seen where your from, you are north. good luck with it, I really enjoyed running equipment.

And buddy and I are thinking about going west (Alberta). I could never figure out what I wanted to do for a living, but after a bad day at work, I realized I need to get me act together and stop wasting time. I love driving heavy equipment and machinery, and I know I'm good at it. I'm the guy everyone at work calls if they can't get a skid down, or if a skid is about to fall and they need me to save it, etc.

I just don't know if I should stick around here until September and take that course ($10,000 for a 12 week course), or if I should head out west and try to get into the field that way. I think my friend is wanting to leave in March, so I need to figure it out soon.
