Anybody see "Test Drive, Jeep Commander" on speed?

It was on last night. To me that thing looks remarkably like the H3. They were singing the praises of jeep's 4wd ability though. They put it through some pretty harsh dirt trails at least...nothing extreme of course, but at least as harsh as what the average driver would do to it. I don't know... if I needed to take 7 passengers off road, I'd get the rear jump seats for my Discovery. At least it doesn't look like a hummer.

I saw it but didn't pay too much attention. I was reading Jp mag at the same time.

I thought it was typically as capable as most modern Jeep SUV's are supposed to be. It seems like they were really weid looking though. Like the front end is way too small or the back is huge.

One of my old friends drove a Discovery and man did that vehicle scare me...tippy(VERY!), under powered, and horrible gas mileage. No idea which year his was. Do you find the same thing to be true with yours?

Thats odd that it was tippy for you. When i was in England I went to this famous car musem where they had a LandRover Test Track. They were giving out rides and I signed up and went through the test track with the driver. He had that Discovery on such a steep bank that my window on the passengers side was almost touching the ground. Half a foot maybe... I was suprised how stable it was.

I too saw the show about the commander on the speed channel. It was ok, i was hopeing they were going to do at least just a little mud or rock driving. it was mostly just dirt trails that i'm sure any 2 wheel drive vehicle with enough ground clearence could have done with ease...

Yeah, maybe your friend was drunk? Just kidding. Mine's a '99 series one...it's an aluminum V8 made by BMW. Power to spare. They do have extremely long travel gas and brake pedals though (for better control when at crawling speed) so it takes some getting used to. You have to put your foot in it, but there is a LOT of engine there. Gas mileage isn't great, but not horrible. Over 20 mpg. They are tall, but I wouldn't call it 'tippy'. the newer ones have ACE (active corner enhancement) suspension, which stiffens the shocks on the outside wheels when cornering. Mine doesn't have this feature, but it's never scared me. It will sidehill at least as well if not better than my jeep.

His was older then 99, perhaps 96 I am thinking. It had a 4.0L V8 that got around 12mpg. It felt as though the sway bar was disconnected.

I'd be interested in seeing AEV make a lift kit/bumper-winch/etc for the Commander now...probably reuse most of the parts from the WK.

My old Isuzu Trooper felt more 'tipsy' than my 96 Disco did. I don't know how you got 20mpg, I only averaged about 15mpg. That Landrover was the only car I've ever missed, I loved it.
