Any Porsche guys out there?

My buddy's lookin in to buying a 944 turbo. Is there anything to look out for when buying one? Are there any infamous problems with Porsches?

How about the fact that it's a Porsche, not a BMW?

IMHO a 20 year old Porsche is going to be a mechanical nightmare. I use to have a 928s4, which was one of the first generation high tech computer boards. After spending thousands, the Porsche mechanic said he loved people like me, because he will retire at a young age. After spending $900 on an oil change and another $1400 for belt replacements, that was enough for me. I sold it and have never been happier.

^^^Its not right to compare a 928 with a 944 though! The 928 while a great car in its day was the test bed for new technologies for Porsche and as with anything containing new tech its gonna cost. This coupled with the fact far fewer 928s were manufactured compared with 944s as well as a huge aftermarket for 944s make the 944 a "more" affordable older porsche.

I had an 87 911 for years and hardly had any issues with it. The issues I did have were related to not driving it enough.

The mechanic I used ran a race shop dedicated to mainly racing 944s. He wrenched to fund his addiction to racing. I've seen firsthand the resources available for an older 944.

The only suggestion I'd make is maybe lose the turbo idea. That will cause pricey issues. If he likes the body IIRC the 944S4 had the nicer body panels w/o the turbo.

oops, make that the S2 and they did make it w/o the turbo.

You are probably correct that it is not fair to compare the two cars. They are completely different beasts! I also agree with eliminating the turbo, alot less headaches down the road.

911 is pretty dependable, 944 t is a maintenance nightmare, if you think the 928 was bad the 944 will dwarf that in costs...there is so much that falls apart on 944's that they are a techs key to early retirement! i was a tech for vw p and a tech for most of my life....

ya the parts are insane i'm fixing up a 928s(just started)...its insane how much parts are and how hard they are to find. I'm scared to even talked to mechanics about their charge for tooling on it. The the aluminum porsche V8 sounds sooo nice best of luck to your buddy

As much crap as I dish out on the 928s4, I still loved that car. I once raced a rice grinder and blew him away at 160 MPH+. With that speed comes other costs, like expensive "Z" rated tires which were about $350 a piece. The more I talk about that car, the more I want another one, so I will quit talking about it and go back to reality!
