The only agency within the US government capable of providing any real disaster support is the Department of Defense. However, that isn't their primary mission, and they are reluctant to get involved in domestic disaster relief. FEMA is the official agency tasked with such missions, but they are disorganized and don't have the resources necessary to be effective, as evidenced by the Katrina situation. Bottom line, DoD is the best we've got.

Also, big ups to Canada. RMC regularly comes down here (West Point) and represents at our Sandhurst Competition every year. Cool people, great to work with. They also gave us the idea for digitizing our camo pattern, first picked up by the Marines.

there are special units that are more search and rescue oriented, but the US military is like a multi purpose tool, good for everything

and I dont think Katrina was a good measure of anything because at the end of the day the Mayor of New Orleans and the Governor of LA both claimed to have jurisdiction over the affected area and got into a pissing contest with FEMA the Red Cross and the National Guard giving them conflicting orders, it was fun to be there and watch them bicker from the the Hyatt where they gave their briefings. I think that all the relief providing agencys were ready, however the leadership (both Mayor and Gov are democrats) was pretty lame a common denominator amongst the democratic party, too indecisive, too wishy washy, and way too pansy to be in charge of anything

War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself.

I don't think it's fair to smear the LA government, and place sole responsibility on them. There was a breakdown at all levels of the Chain of Command, and they certainly didn't perform flawlessly.

Either way, what it does show is that the US has no effective task force besides DoD to take care of these problems. DoD is directly subordinate to the Executive. If anything, we should be talking about the lackadaisical reaction from the higher ups. I wouldn't say that "George Bush hates black people," but at some point he deserves some blame as well. Since the Canadian Airborne Regiment was disbanded in '95 (I trained and got my Canadian wings with them years ago), Canada has very few airborne units. Who is stationed at US bases? I know there are none at Ft Bragg.

MDjeeper, Im actually at RMC, and I think you forgot to mention we have won the international sandhurst competition (beating out several US teams) for 2 years in a row now Anyway, if your ever down this way give me a shout.

Snuffster, yes they did and it was stupid. However, I know there are still some ex-airbourne and para's that are currently down there helping with training. Im not sure numbers or locations but if you want I can find out.

Holidayjeepy, didnt we burn down your white house?

The Coast Guard aren't DoT anymore. They are Homeland Security. The Navy is talking about "selling" them a carrier. They, combined with the National Guard are domestic disaster response. Internationally it is primarily the 4 uniformed DoD services. I've seen Coastie augmentees though.

The CG had a cutter in the Gulf for Iraqi Freedom...

We did Counter Narco Terrorism last summer with the CG, so I guess it works both ways... They help the Navy the Navy helps them... You get the picture...

There were Canadians in Afghanistan before I got there. I got there right at the end of Anaconda. Canadians aren't the only ones with far left retards. Have you watched the news lately? to you Frumpy.

Now as far as the American military having a specific unit for emergency/disaster relief...We don't have a specific unit, but we do send units to help out. For example during the Tsunamis I was in Korea at the time. I'm an Apache guy, so there was no need for us, but they did some blackhawks and chinooks fom Korea to aid in medevac and bring in supplies. I wanted to be part of that mission because it would have been a nice change of pace. Hope that answers the original question.

They go to disaster torn area usually deploy withing 72 hours and will stay for upto 40 days to provide initial aid. They were formed in 96 after Rwanda and have conducted 4 major missions and are based out of Kingston and Trenton Ontario. Currently they are in the process of getting their own stratigic lift aircraft that will be available to them whenever they want and when not working for them will help suply Canada and the US in Afghanistan and Iraq.)

Wasnt looking for a smart *** answer, just wanted to know who responds for the americans to these type of situations

We use regular military personnell who's jobs would have some impact on the particular disaster. With the tsunami disaster we sent lots of doctors, choppers, para-resuce guys, and lots of just regular joes to carry out admin stuff and carry crap around.

We have no 'specially trained' force to respond to disasters. Our entire military is trained to do that in one form or the other.
