Alaskan Ferry to end.

The freakin Left Coast Liberals of Washington State have done it again! I heard on the news the other day the the legislature has introduced a bill to stop the Alaskan Ferry from leaving any port in Washington State. This is in protest to the federal government allowing the exploration for oil to continue in Alaska. It is the only ship link from the main land to Alaska that doesn't need to go thru customs. They are hoping that this will push Alaskans to fight the Feds on the oil issue.

Never mind what that will do to the Alaskan economy. Never mind removing our dependency on foreign oil. Never mind the economic loss for Bellingham, Wa where the ferry is based currently. This is a bad idea all the way around! Wake up Olympia!!!!!

Yes, America will surely become OPEC's lap dog if we lose the Alaskan Ferry. How can those dirty Liberals hate their own country so much?

He forgets to notice that a brand new natural gas pipeline is in the works from Alaska down to Chicago. But the Ferry is the deciding factor.

Now, I'm no Liberal (believe me), but I believe in objective viewing and you have got your facts horribly wrong.

First of all, it was Alaskan State Rep. Kurt Olson (R - Soldotna) that introduced legislation to cut off the ferry. He is doing this because of Sen. Cantwell's (D-WA) oppostition to drilling in ANWAR.

Second, Alaska is the one that is "holding WA hostage" not the other way around. Washington State has never opposed any ferry to Alaska. This was not an issue until Rep. Olson brought it up.

Third, nothing is final yet. The legislation was just introduced and a hearing hasn't even been scheduled.

This is just the latest "Alaska vs. Washington" battle. A few weeks ago, Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens tried to move the USCG icebreaker Healy to Anchorage, despite the USCG's assesment that it was best to leave it in Seattle. There was absolutely no good reason to move the ship and it is staying put (thankfully).

Actually, it was the Washington State Legislator that said they didn't want the ferry terminal based in Washington anymore. Not sure if there was a bill passed and signed into law, I was having trouble researching this tonight. My original post was based on an article I read in Seattle, perhaps the Seattle Times or the Tacoma Tribune? I can't remember. I will see what I can did up.

I'd rather talk about the price of gas. I remember when it was $0.60 a gallon! Something must be done before it rises all the way to a buck!

How long does it take to ride the ferry to Alaska? That would be a cool trip. You could set ini the Jeep with the top down and take in the scenery.

The ferry system is equipped to handle both cars and passengers on the 2-3 day trip. There is a covered, heated area of the deck for campers or, for a extra charge, accomodations are available in cabins.
